It doesn't in any other sport and they don't fight in the handshake line. Why would they suddenly fight because they're not queued up?

I don't see that happening

I don't understand your hate for the handshake, SP. It's one of the coolest things in sport. Just because one giant ######bag can't control himself in the decades it's been going on doesn't mean it's a fake, failed practice that should be abolished.

Also, sorry I thought you were mafia.

Other sports don't have fighting. I could see that mingling could degenerate to seeking out the guy you want to even scores with. The hand shake with it's tradition, keeps the players in line.

Haha. First off, your kidding yourself if you think this is the first time. There was a bunch of former NHLer's on NHL radio Thursday/Friday and they all unanimously said they've heard worse and one old timer said he just didn't even bother shaking hands. Phil Esposito went on a long rant about how stupid he thought it was. I just don't understand the need for the show.

Players should absolutely have a chance to shake the hand of an opponent they respect. The Selanne thing last night showed that. What doesn't need to happen is every guy mumbling good game to each other and not meaning it. It doesn't affect my viewing pleasure, I just don't see the big deal with what happened here

I find the amount of drama about what *guys said* in the playoffs this year getting absurd. Between Duncan Keith's "wakey wakey" comment and the Lucic comment, people have lost their minds about what were likely 2 of the least offensive comments made in the playoffs compared to what I've heard sitting in the first 10 rows of any game I've been to.

Credit to Dale Weise. 2 weeks ago, I had no real clue who this guy was. Now I know he's a big suck hole. Pains me that this guy is a fellow Winnipegger. He's gonna hear way worse from the ladies he's creeping on at the Palomino Club this summer so I hope he brings some tissues.

Don't waste your time I made that point 10 pages ago, but some continue to be up in arms. Its really no big deal worse things are said in pre-season games "F'd your wife last night" ect.

blown way out of proportion by some

I don't see that as worse at all. Threatening someone and making a childish statement like that are 2 totally different things. It's also one thing to say something under your breath in the handshake line-up, but is another to grab the persons hand, stop the line from moving and make threats. Big difference. You don't see that often.

you don't think "I'm gonna kill you" is said often in the NHL? "I'm gonna kick your ass" ect.

those kinds things are said all the time

Seriously? I'm gonna f'n kill you next year from one hockey player to another is a serious threat? You don't think that is quite literally said 50 times a game?

Exactly.

A little different if he says "I'm gonna @&@@@& kill you outside the dressing room" or "in the parking lot".

He's obviously talking about playing better or hitting harder or winning a fight on the ice.

Maybe not the best timing for the comments (but I get that it's an emotional time), but not horrible unforgivable comments.

Ok hold on.

Weiss was asked what Lucic said in the line. He said that it was classless, but didn't say what Lucic said.

How does that make Weiss a suck hole? What exactly did Weiss do wrong there?

As for what Lucic said, if it was during the game I'd agree. But once the game is over then so are the antics. You shake hands out of respect and move on.

Respect is something that is undervalued in our society. It should be encouraged, and taught to not only children but encouraged for adults as well.

Keep the mind games IN the game. Once the game is over leave it at that.

Couldn't disagree more, carrying over grudges is how great rivalries are made.

Carry over from game to game. But you don't take it to the parking lot afterwards. You don't go to the other team's dressing room. You play the game. You keep your passion in the game.

It's just as classless to tell someone in a handshake line that you're going to kill them as it is in a post game press conference or in the paper the next day.

You don't show up and egg the opposition's house in the name of rivalry, just like you don't disrespect the game, your teammates and each other by threatening people in the handshake line.

Cultivate rivalry sure, you do it during the games, not outside of them.

I don't think anyone was advocating that Lucic stalk Weise and wait for him with a tire iron in the parking lot. There was actually a good article about the "handshake incident" in the national post the other day. Was what Lucic said right? No. Was it understandable? Absolutely.

Keep in mind that over the 7 game series some hatred was formed between the teams and certain players. Buzzer sounds to end the series and minutes later you're shaking hands with the guy that had likely been saying just as derogatory things to you and is now moving onto the next round. That's gotta sting and I think it's understandable that Lucic was pissed off and said what he said.

A bunch of former nhlers were in xm radio and they ALL said this is somewhere commonplace, so our argument is not about right/wrong, but severity. It's wrong and shows a lack of respect to Jay walk in front of someone, but I'm not going to scream at the top of my lungs about it. We're putting in context here.

Yes once the game is over the emotion should be bottled and good sportsmanship displayed. 5 minutes after the game is over one can pretty much expect someone to still have the emotions a bit high. Your asking for ideal, and I don't think anyone disagrees, but man people here have made a giant deal of a minor issue. In my opinion, downloading illegal or watching illegal streams of sporting events shows a much greater lack of respect. So most people here can just stfu about already

I'm not saying I don't understand why he said it. I'm staying he still should have bit hit tongue.
  • The handshake after the game happens after games from minor hockey on up
  • This isn't the first post-series handshake Lucic has had
  • This isn't the first series loss Lucic ever suffered
  • Lucic is paid millions of dollars to be a professional hockey player; part of that is to act professionally
  • Professional atheletes are role models, and have to ask as such; we hold NHLers to a higher standard in terms of lost of things such as, level of play, but also in how you act.

I think what Lucic did was out of line, regardless of how he felt. If 99% of the other players out there bite their tongue after a hard fought series loss, then it's expected that Lucic could too.

But, but, but
keep the passion in the game. It really shouldn't be any harder than that. If everyone would just take a minute and think, keep the passion inside of this box, then we'd all be better for it. But no, some people can't seem to regulate their passion, and we are left plagued by this horrible situation that we find ourselves in. Because of what Lucic said, this sour milk thread is still in the fridge.
