Except get 13 on the back, as he won't be wearing 53 come next year

Gaudreau is never going to be a stalwart in his own end, and I don't see a problem with this. Not every single forward on our roster needs to be a good two-way player.
Gaudreau can help win hockey games and get fans excited to come to the Dome.
If exciting hockey is one of Burke's three pillars, Gaudreau is the biggest piece going for him.
Scott Stevens is Matt Cooke with all the awards. Never liked or respected his play.
I completely disagree. Stevens hit clean and hard. Back then it was acceptable to put a shoulder through a guys forehead. Headhunting was part of the game. He seldom dragged knees or hit from behind.

He did hit guys in vulnerable positions though. He hit to hurt and to cause injury.
That was a reflection of the time though.
I never really cared for the huge hits that left guys twitching on the ice.

here's what i love; the 'temper your expectations' crowd has now had to stretch logic more than the 'he's a phenom' crowd.
rationally you should all just run out and buy your johnny hockey jerseys now and stop poking holes in a life raft.
My number one reason to keep Johnny in AHL for a while is that he may get hurt.
Last year I wanted both Monahan and Sven to play in NHL.
However, in case of Sieloff I thought he should be in AHL.
I predicted that he would play less than 20 games in NHL before someone would beat the living daylights out of him putting his carrier in jeopardy, he got his jaw broken before game 1.

Love to see this kind of stuff from gaudreau at a tough tournament and playing on a team without much help. I agree that he seems more and more like a real game-breaker. People like to use Patrick Kane as an example but I think another more fair comparison might be Jeff Skinner.
Gaudreau is the gamebreaker the Flames' desperately need going forward. He is yet another piece of the puzzle. Glad to see him ripping it up on a national level!
Check out video of that amazing shift he had today on the power-play:
He's an offensive catalyst out there and was basically running the US pp.
Also a big 'up yours' to the "oh but he'll be a defensive liability" crowd. The way he chases that opposing player down after the turn-over to recover the puck is huge... and he does that all the time. He hustles like mad on the back check and is very good with his stick. I think he's going to be fine defensively, and dynamic offensively. Oh, and of course the falling down shovel-pass in this clip is sheer brilliance. Goes without saying.

There were several instances where I saw him backcheck hard in the defensive zone which I love. Even in his first NHL game, his ability to steal the puck away from NHL calibre players was very apparent.

K, well I don't want to come across as the next "moon" but we must have been watching two different WHC's. The best way I could describe Gaudreaus defensive coverage in this tournament is akin to Iginlas defensive abilities over the past five years. Not a big deal for an offensive player, but the free ride some of you posters are willing to give is a little much. He isn't the next Gretzky, when did it become a crime to point that out?

I'm not anointing him the next Selke winner, but his defensive coverage is just fine for the stage he's at. I have watched every US game thus far and while he's not playing like a centre in his own end (nor should he), he hustles back and makes smart defensive plays. I'm talking about the few people here who feel the need to be a wet blanket claiming the everyone needs to temper down their excitement because he's a defensive liability. That's absolute trash. I wouldn't call him 'good' defensively at this point, but in no way does that aspect stick out as a concern like some here seem quick to point out.
Some people just like to rain on the parade. Case in point... there were so many exciting things in that video, and what do you focus in on? Sorry, but you're being 'that guy'.

I'm fine with that, and I'm not arrogant enough in my opinion to ever tell anyone here to temper optimism. I just think after watching him over the past while, that there is still a heavy learning curve ahead of him. He still makes bone headed plays like Tanguay when it comes to blindely throwing the puck back too the point, or trying to go through two or three opponents when someone else is open. All things that he can grow out of, but he still has growing to do as a prospect, and there isn't anything wrong with that.

And I just don't see that at all. When you count the number of amazingly astute tape-to-tape passes he makes the arrant ones would be in a very small statistic comparatively. But that speaks to my overall opinion on your take. Taking a small negative example and coming here to post it over the optimistic ones is perplexing to me. Especially when we look at how this is a flames board where the optimism is obviously going to be high.
The amount of mistakes he makes (and of course there will be some with his age and coming right from college) are far, far outweighed by his brilliant plays. It's not even close. To watch him this tournament and to come away from it with the things you're mentioning being the first items to bring up is really bizarre to me. But you're entitled to your opinion.
The number of passes in this play alone speak for itself, and he's been doing this for the US all tourney:
