You think they should hire Tortarella then? Crisp?
I don't see the coach as a major problem, certainly not one where an obvious upgrade exists. They've been really good for all of the time he has been there. They are most definitely a streaky team. If you think that is coaching, fine, but I think it comes down to the fact that the difference between success and failure in the playoffs is razor thin.

Meeting the LA Kings so early in the playoffs two years in a row definitely doesn't help them go on a deep run.

We're going to have to agree to disagree here. But I don't think it's really up for debate that this was not the season to put McLellan on the plank. Two Cup contenders went out in the first round because they were playing other Cup contenders. The West was a beast this year.

Bruins had a great season and loss to a worse team than the Kings. I don't think Julien is all of a sudden a bad coach. It's a long season and as we have seen any playoff team can win a series if their goaltender is on fire. Sharks could probably look at an upgrading between the pipes and on the blue line but there's still a lot to like about the coach and roster.

Julien has something in common with McLellan in losing after being up 3-0 in a playoff series.

Sure, but the cup came after the Philly collapse.

You can say the Flames Cup was due to a lucky game 7 bounce agains the Canucks or the Lightning being lucky thee was a game 6 goal review. Wouldn't change the fact that those teams won the cup. Most teams that win the cup needs a bounce or two to go their way.

I really like when the team stands by the coach and GM. Tells the players who's in charge.
You can't have the inmates running the asylum, you have to have accountability by the players in order to actually coach them.
It's accountability why Hartley did such a great job with the Flames this year, and it's a roster of rookies so close to million dollar contracts that are willing to do whatever it takes that are willing to be accountable to a coach.
However, if you have a team with some stars and vets, why do they need to listen to the coach? Coaches get fired all the time, don't like the coach? Wait, he'll get fired. Screw that noise... change the players.

Teams that get 111 points don't need a roster shake-up. Although they're getting a bit long in the tooth and if they want sustainable success they ought to consider gradually moving out some of their older guys while they can still get value for them.

I have 17 words for you:
No. Show. Joe.
(Ironically, the other 14 words I was going to use all disappeared when I needed them most too.)

They've sort of become the Flyers of the West. They always get out goaltended in the playoffs. I don't see how moving a Joe Thornton makes them any better. You aren't going to replace the guy no matter how he 'chokes' playoffs - he still takes on all the tough matchups for them.
That said - they lose their best defenseman. No one likes excuses but Vlasic was probably the one guy they couldn't afford to lose.

With Thornton and Marleau signing extensions with full NMC, it's going to be extremely difficult to move them for anything close to value. They will both be 35 starting next season.
San Jose is the most puzzling team in the NHL. I'm not sure what they can do.

I would say improve the D as they need a bit more youth and depth on the back end. They have some good forwards to challenge for roster spots out of camp, but that D core has to get younger and deeper. Losing Pickles really exposed their biggest weakness.

Sharks-Kings have met 3 times in the past 4 years. Last year was in the 2nd round. This year and 2011 were in the 1st round and the Sharks made it to the 3rd round in 2011.
