Sounds like Vanier has a lot of room for improvement in the skating department. Is it too much of a deficiency for him to be able to sufficiently upgrade his stride/edgework/agility to NHL levels?
I do like him as a project prospect, but I could see him dropping into the 3rd round. If he were still on the board when Pittsburgh's 3rd round pick is at the podium I would take him. Any earlier and I think it' say bit of a risk. He might be this years equivalent to Eric Roy.

Roy might be a good comparison, but.... I think Vanier is a little better. You also have a weaker draft than last year, and most of the high skill players in it are small. You see a 6'5" defenceman in that group who has everything but the skating at this point and I think in this group he's worth the earlier gamble.
These guys who are 6'5" often have that weak skating at this age and improve. I see more improvements in tall prospects with their skating (it may never get to make them a speedster but a weak guy can become good enough to make it passable) than in the smaller guys.
Part of it is sometimes the awkwardness of growing into their bodies.
Chara for one looked like a baby giraffe on skates when he was an Islander. Later he would improve. He's the most drastic example but there are others too.

Pass on Vanier... don't want any poor skaters. I suppose if he falls to round 6 or something take a chance but I'd rather the team not burn any of it's top 100 picks on bad skaters.

Disagree. Big raw D-men are exactly what this team should be after with their second and third round picks.

Between McKeown, Glover, and Pettersson, there will be some really good guys to choose from at 34. I'd pick them in that order as well. Nothing better than skilled big D-men.

Same... although I'd probably slot Dougherty and Sanheim in there somewhere. Hell, if everything goes right we might get two of them (one at 34 and one at the Ave's pick).

There's about a dozen D-men that are rated in the 30-60 range that are 6-2 or bigger and most are quality at both ends of the ice. If we could get Glover and Haydon in the 2nd round or the early 3rd, I'd be thrilled. Haydon is basically a 6-3 Sieloff.

With so few D available, I'll be suprised if McKeown falls outside the first round.

Add Dougherty to that list as well, Sanheim too. They're great defensemen who play two way games. Both should go 1st round IMO

I doubt McKeown falls past 25. The good thing is that there are a bunch of guys in the space just below that (Sanheim, Glover, Dougherty, Haydon, and a bunch more) there's about 15-20 really good D-men that should go between 25 and 65. I'm just hoping we can snag 2 or 3 of them.
