With this season almost done would you trade Monahan, Poirier and Klimchuk for MacKinnon. MacKinnon is clearly the best player among them but I wouldn't make that trade.
|
Yes I would make that deal and I really like Monahan, but MacKinnon looks like a stud and future 1st line center for the next 10+ years.

Without taking away anything from Mackinnon his stats are partially inflated from stellar line mates.
That being said I would still have traded all 3 first round picks for him.

Stellar linemates?
Hasn't he been playing on the 3rd line for most of the year? I haven't watched the Avs lately but earlier in the year he wasn't playing with Duchene/Landeskog/Statsny.

According to Behind the Net Landeskog is the player he has played with the most this season.

Mackinnon is on a better team than Calgary. For the roster that Calgary has, Monahan with 20 goals (and most likely a couple more), is amazing. Once we have a solid roster, don't be surprised with Monny putting up 30-40 goal seasons.

Yes.
Also, very happy having to 'settle' with Monahan, Poirier and Klimchuk.

Wow Mantha just capped off a brilliant Junior season. Won the QMJHL championship, going to the Memorial Cup.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
According to @TSNquizmaster, that's 81 goals in 81 GP for Mantha. 57 in 57 reg season; 24 in 24 playoffs. No math major but that's GAG.

I was surprised he lasted till Detroit at 20. Solid back to back 50 goal campaigns...and that playoffs, just wow.

I don't pretend to watch all these players but when I looked at his goal scoring production, size, and skating ability I couldn't figure out why he wasn't a top 10 prospect. It certainly looks like he should have been. He's a guy I was hoping the Flames would have been able to get with the Blues pick and it would have been interesting to see if the Flames still would have taken Poirier if Mantha was still available.

I was under the impression, from what we heard before the draft, that Mantha was sort of a one way player whose skating wasn't that great and he kinda went where he was supposed to.

I recall his skating being very good and the only knock is that he didn't look like he was involved at times. I recall reading a scout counter that saying big guys often come off looking like they aren't trying as hard even when they are. Looks like he was right.

Quote:
“Mantha is a big kid with a ton of physical maturation left and a very projectable frame,” says Ross MacLean, head scout for International Scouting Services. “He has a smooth skill set for a big man and is a very good shooter. He never seems to dominate on the ice but always finds himself in great scoring areas and he doesn’t miss very often. He does not play physically, something that often shocks you when you go to watch him play.”
“He’s got a great shot and he doesn’t need much time or space to release it,” says David Burstyn, director of scouting for McKeen’s Hockey. “He’s got good size, but he’s a bit gangly and he needs to work on his lower-body strength a little bit. He’s not a great skater and he certainly needs to work on that. The other aspect of his game is he’s got to be more involved. He’s prone to not just taking shifts, but periods and nights off.
“At the end of the day,” Burstyn concludes, “he’s got a premium and that is that he can score goals. That might be hard for teams to overlook. You take a team like Calgary that has three first-rounders — maybe they take a chance on this guy.”
|
I do recall reading that the reason he fell in a lot of rankings was work ethic.

I think the one team that may have regrets is Columbus who at 15 took Weenberg and then Rychel at 19.

Would have been awesome to get Mantha, but Poirier will suffice too.

Wennberg looks fine to me. Pretty sure they're super happy with him.

He also skates extremely well, but his consistency on the ice and effort level has come into question. For a player of his size, he needs to keep his feet moving and work hard on both sides of the puck

a surprisingly fluid skater who generates excellent acceleration speed after his first start-up strides, which could use better quickness .. his turns are improving quickly ..

Bottom line is that skating wasn't considered a major weakness as it's not like Monahan is a burner.
