I'll take Dion back at this price.

We need to get to the floor!

Talk about the floor for one year by taking a 7 year contract? Rather overpay someone on a one year deal.

The flames will have NO problem reaching the floor

Phaneuf at the contract is not worth it. Better off overpaying for another FA than to trade and pay that much for a defenceman who can't play under pressure.

I'd do it. For 6x$6 million, I'd sell my soul too.

Of course, I might forget to play D a little when Monahan standing in the middle waiting for a fat rebound.

I certainly don't see Neon Dion being the type that goes from El Capitan in the centre of the universe to a second pairing, team-first, taking direction from this undrafted fella (I'm a first overall you know), cog on a rebuilding team.

No thanks.

If Phaneuf comes back it'll be hard to cheer for the Flames. Everything he stands for, I do not like. He doesn't play nearly the same physical game he did when he came into the NHL which was his bread and butter, and he is a liability defensively.

What exactly does he stand for?

If "Mark" is Mark Giordano, I'm sure he'd be pretty excited about one of his better friends in the game of hockey coming back to Calgary.

Gio and Dion are friends.

Huge, huge pass. This team needs good character players to help the rebuild along. Don't think Dion is at the top of the list in that category. There will be other options that fit the team identity better to help hit the cap floor, you only bring in a guy like Dion if there are no question marks. Let the Oilers have him.

My general impressions are that Dion Phaneuf stands for himself first and foremost before the team. He wants to be "the man" and wants to be idolized, reflective in his style of play and overall demeanor. He doesn't seem like a good selection to be a team captain but would be an ideal 3-4 defenceman that you could utilize as a PP specialist. At his price tag that would be horrific cap management, not to mention the Leafs are going to want a kings ransom in a trade because they're probably deluding themselves into thinking he is something more than an albatross liability on the defensive side of the puck as they sit around and drink their koolaid, and read their media's hype on their team.

He seems like the type of guy that is quite cocky and arrogant and would be a bad mix for the team first culture the Flames worked hard to embrace last season.

I think Phaneuf would be a great second line damn. I don't get all the hate. He's not a bad defenseman he's just not what the leafs wanted him to be. On a more minor role I think he would be a good addition.

Maybe you know this for sure, and anything is possible.

But generally humble, down to earth people aren't 'besty's' with self absorbed inflated ego's.

On that note, perhaps Dion has matured since he left, but on the other hand his play has deteriorated. I have a feeling the sum positive/negative effects of his combined attributes still make him an overall negative to the team.

Please no.

With Hartley as coach I think he could turn Dion around and get more of his potential. He had Butler playing a consistent game, if Hartley can do that he could force Dion to learn. The contract is awful though so no thanks.

That's the whole thing: I agree with you, he's an awesome guy who has grown like most ppl.. are you the same 6 years later? I doubt it. So yes, I would love to have this guy.. but let's be honest -- the contract is crazy. Luongo crazy.

Great guy, bad price.

Agreed. I don't hate Phaneuf at all - I was just as excited about him in his first few years as a promising young player as much as I am excited about the young players we have today, and I think he is very passionate about winning.

His 7 million cap hit would make him the highest paid on the Flames though and he wouldn't even be the best player on this team - you want the highest paid player on your team to be earning every bit of that money and show no signs of the complacency that has plagued this team before the rebuild started.
