Montreal is only a hack in smoked meat in comparison to NYC.
Katz Delicatessen is a miracle of god. House cured pickles to die for. There is no comparison.
http://katzsdelicatessen.com
I know it's not in Calgary, but for gods sakes can we franchise one of these?
I also really like a grilled salmon with garlic aioli on grilled ciabatta, with some romaine lettuce on top.
Gonna try Peppino's out asap! Thanks for the tip.

Classic "tea" sandwich, but it's impossibly good for the lack of ingredients. It's also the most frustrating sandwich to have a sandwich shop make, "I'd like only cucumber please, no, no other vegetables, just cucumber, more cucumber than that please, well I'm not getting anything else so I'd like some more..." etc etc.

for an added twist to that exact sandwich, add some brie cheese!

There is a Peppino's downtown now, it's on the +15 level just off 4th and 4th. I go there frequently. Love the olive oil dressing.

I disagree, Montreal smoked meat is more tender and juicy.

talking of british sandwiches i've cracked the code of creating a proper Cheese + Onion; you just need a grater!
Grate Cheddar into a bowl, then grate onion next getting all the juices in there (essential part), then add mayo and pepper...so simple yet savoury!

When I live in Calgary I worked one block away.
I can't recall what they call the sandwich, but there is one where you can have the employee make it up for you on the spot. I never had a bad sandwich.

Cold meatloaf sliced 1/2 inch thick, brush with milk, coat with panko and parmesan.
Fry until golden, top with carmelized onions and serve on toasted Winnipeg rye bread spread with mayo and spicy mustard.

You're on to something here.
Change milk to buttermilk, and mix some sriracha in with it and you've got a winner.

The buttermilk would be a nice change up but it involves buying buttermilk. If only you could buy a small carton of buttermilk...
The sriracha would be nice but only if I stopped using the "make my eyes water" mustard with horseradish and chili in it.

Making a recipe that calls for buttermilk? Use this simple substitute, and you won't need to buy any:
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
Ingredients:
- Milk (just under one cup)
- 1 Tablespoon white vinegar or lemon juice
Preparation:
1. Place a Tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice in a liquid measuring cup.
2. Add enough milk to bring the liquid up to the one-cup line.
3. Let stand for five minute. Then, use as much as your recipe calls for.
Have heavy cream in the fridge? If so, you have everything you need to make real buttermilk:

Took the ferry from Connecticut to Long Island a few years ago on the way to NYC. Hit Bruce's Cheese Emporium in Greenport, NY.
Best bacon, tomato and cheese sandwich ever.
A large serving of brown sugar cured bacon with a thick slice of ripe tomato. Melted cheddar on top. Served on a lightly toasted pumpernickel. I still can't stop talking about it and try to convince my wife to return every summer.
