The draft record during Benning's tenure isn't all that impressive. A few hits and misses with top 10 picks, and most don't even play for the club anymore.
Kessel
Hamill
Colborne
Caron
Seguin
Hamilton
Malcom Subban
If his mandate is to draft and trade away any worthwhile talent, then I'm all for him joining the Canucks ranks.
So a first time executive in Linden may hire a never been a GM before (although qualified) and probably will pick a brand new coach, if the rumours are true? Not sure that is the smartest thing.
Except assistant GM's don't get a ring..as far as I know anyway.
Everyone in the organization gets a ring pretty much. No league rule on this so anyone who is chosen gets one - not the same at getting name on the CUP. TV guys, trainers, etc. Definitely everyone in the Front Office gets one.

I have a good friend that worked for the oilers, in marketing, and he has 2 rings

His record in Buffalo when he was the director of amateur scouting is more impressive.

For what it's worth, there are very few GMs who get a second chance. Heck, even guys like Feaster and Nonis were promoted from within rather than hired outright. It will be interesting to see who is the next coach of the Canucks. Linden talked about hiring an experienced career coach, but if Benning is the GM Houda's name has come up a lot.
That is true, being the front runner doesn't mean he will pick them. I hear he is very comfortable out east.
his off season home is in Portland though, and Washington hasn't even contacted him
I think it's just media bringing something up, they can't write any more stories about Benning being a front runner and he may not be hired, if at all, for another few weeks

they still need to fill pages in that time
Well considering that Benning's name has repeatedly come up in GM openings, it sounds like he's the guy that almost every team looking for a GM is going to interview. With that said, it does seem the Capitals are taking their time so the Canucks might get first crack if they are willing to make an offer.
Linden seem to be interviewing some quality candidates (Benning, Futa, and maybe Fenton?)
