I bought a Venza because I wanted the comfortable, more refined interior. The 3.5 L v6 is nice and powerful too. Toyotas have always been nice and reliable for me and my family. I'm glad you enjoy your Forester. No need to be a dick about it.

After your response to my initial post you actually have the audacity to say that? We don't own a Forester btw.

Don't you get it? His values are the only important ones, if yours differ, they are wrong.

It's not my opinion though. Go search the web where these two cars are often compared and the Outback usually gets the verdict. All I said was that it was a better value. Never said the Venza was junk so there's really no need to get your panties in a bunch is there?

Well, considering that you decided to bang on about the Forester as a response to my post describing the rake of the rear of the Venza what did you expect?

Your post came from out of nowhere to tell me that the Forester was so much of better value than the Venza. Good for you. That wasn't what I posted about in the first place.

Also, audacity? Save the drama for your mama. Get over yourself.

Telling someone who doesn't want a more rugged vehicle with full time AWD, but who does want a more refined interior that the Outback is a better value is flat out wrong.

People want different things from their vehicle. Everyone is happy that you like your Outback. That doesn't mean that everyone should hold the same values as you.

By all means, rave about the great features on your car, but don't start telling people what they should want.

We have a '12 Grand Cherokee and it has been great so far.

A co-worker also has a Grand Cherokee but with the air suspension, and he has had some trouble with it.

2014 RDX vs 2014 Forester, which one would you choose?

I'm looking to buy my first car. I'm looking for price and technology, not really interested in other interior/exterior items and how powerful it is. So I've narrowed it down to a Jetta and a Mazda 3. With the Mazda 3 I can get all the options I want and it is cheaper than a Jetta with similar options. Any recommendations?

Also being a first time buyer, will it be best for me to shop near the end of the year, near the end of the month, on a Monday?

Get the Mazda 3 as they have decent resale value and you won't be limiting yourself on maintenance when it comes to garages who will service it for you.

Get it near the end of the month but take what they have on the lot. If they have to source it for you you can bank on zero desperation from the salesperson.

Are Mazdas still rust buckets, or have they fixed that?

When it comes to Jeeps, my first suggestion, is decide if it's practical for you?
There are lots of other options, that are cheaper, if you're just looking for a mid sized SUV to drive around town in. If you guys like camping, off-roading or towing, then that's when Jeep should be near the top of your list.

As far as maintenance goes, if you take care of them, they'll take care of you.
I've never had a Jeep die on me, unless I killed it (which to be quiet honest is the best part about a Jeep... When they're at the end of their life, take it out to the bush and have some fun), and I've never had to kill one with less than 400,000km's on it.
I'm no mechanic, but consider myself handy, I have always done my own regular maintenance, and with all the gas engine Jeeps, have never had to bring them into an actual mechanic. As for the Diesel, it was new to me, and did bring it in once for testing when the transmission was thrown into LAG. Unfortunately, dodge/chrysler were not much help, and I eventually figured it out on my own (swirl valve motor).

TL : DR: Jeeps are great, and easy/cheap to maintain.

I have a theory, not based in fact, that less "complex" Jeeps are better.

Thoughts?

I've been playing the "what to buy next" game for a while now too...

Sold my Ralliart Sportback (here ;D) because we just had our first kid and wanted to get something more family friendly as a second vehicle... But let me ask those who have a family? Do I need to have 2 family ready vehicles? We already have a double cab truck and we are looking at upgrading it to a crew-cab when the 2015 F150's come out. I was thinking I could have a bit of fun with my grocery getter in town.

Test drove several SUVs and also some family sedans but I am honestly leaning towards a 5-door GTI as I've owned 2 Golfs in the past and they were pretty fun while still being somewhat practical.

That depends on your definition of "better"....
Obviously "less complex" Jeeps, or any vehicle for that matter, are less likely to have strange or serious mechanical issues.
So if "Better" is more cost effective to maintain, then yes, the less "complex" the better.

The *BEST* Jeep I have ever had, based on practicality, is by far the 07 Grand Cherokee CRD. The Mercedes 3.0L Turbo Diesel provides a tonne more torque, so pulls more, and is better off-roading, and gets way better mileage.
But, it is a far more complex drive train, and has caused me the most mechanical issues.

Yeah, I have 4 friends/family members who have purchased Mazdas. Every single one of them started rusting really badly on the back and rear quarter panels. These were all a few years ago though.

I'm assuming that something has been done to remedy the problem. I don't know why anyone would purchase a Mazda if it was only going to be drivable for 5-7 years (and a rust-ridden POS after 3).

Yeah poor word. By "better" I meant less maintenance issues, and lower cost of ownership.

You value off-roading capability, and don't mind a more rubber-maid interior. That's totally cool. But, suggesting someone else doesn't appreciate the same, that's where the audacity actually lies.
