Careful them Calgary folk get super defensive when communities other than their own point out their flagrant wastes of money.
Thanks for the big blue ring on my commute from my parasite community Calgary really spiced up the drive.

Inner city folks got what they deserve, a beautiful art piece, a pedestrian bridge that has quickly become an iconic part of Calgary and a beacon for photographers, used extensively in tourism and travel promotions.
Parasites from Airdire got what they deserve to improve their commute, a giant ring.

So this thread about Airdrie finds itself consumed by inner city Calgary folk bashing the town and it's residents. These same folk are constantly hovering around the thread "thanking" each other's posts.
So with all that time you save on commutes you rush home to a message board and bash Airdrie? Wow... Living proof the inner city has SO much to offer. There MUST be something better to do?

Being smug to people in person requires too long of a bike ride, made even more difficult by our tight, tight jeans.

Everytime I work in Airdrie I yell out "I took your jerbs!"
Feels good using that city instead of them just using us all the time.

New York, seems to be doing ok, as do other cities.

In as much as I do not oppose the current model, I am not certain New York is a great example having just been there. Manhattan is nice, but Brooklyn especially looks like mid-1980s Beiruit.

It's the keeping up with the Jones' effect in full, and I mean full force in this city. All young families with the "Calgary" dream.
Young, rich city, filled with lots of people who aren't actually rich, but feel social pressure and a desire to fit into that lifestyle. I know this happens everywhere, it's not Calgary specific, but it sure is noticeable here.
The following are "needs" for so many young families in this city...
-New starter home, gotta be new so they can pick all of their "needs" to be designed/installed
-New vehicle for both husband and wife, can't be seen in a 2007 in 2014, that shows that you're not keeping up, errr sorry "These vehicles met all of our needs"
-Annual vacation to talk about for the next 6 months. The 6 months after getting back will be used to talk about the next vacation. Gotta have that upcoming vacation to bring up when everyone else brings up their next vacation. No upcoming vacation = trouble in paradise.

Unlike Flameswin, I will be a little less cynical.
I think part of it is the unknown. People are scared of what an "old house" is hiding. Part of this is driven by any number of shows you see on TV, that show old homes Falling apart and in need of major repair. There is the belief that with a new home none of those issue will arise (and for the most part is true).
Some of the homes that are older are also in need of an update, not major repair, but an up date on 30 yr old finished/material. A $400,000 home built in 1980 is often in need of upgrades, which requires more funds.
There are home inspection to offset some of the concerns, but even they are not perfect and cannot see/foresee some issues.
My recollection from building new, was the contract allowed the owner to have the property inspected during the building process to ensure it was built correctly, this provides piece of mind to many owners.
Just my thoughts.

Personally I find I see more obvious issues in 5-10 year old homes than 30-40 year ones. Maybe part of it is the home "settling" over the years, but when doors get stuck while opening or closing and the stair rail feels like it's gonna pop off in my hand I'm not convinced that "new" homes are a better value.

There really isn't much else to do while waiting in line for our lattes.

Not sure I get the difficulty in understanding people's preference for a new house. Why do people buy anything new? Because it's new. Contrary to popular belief, not everyone works downtown, and thus need to be close to downtown. I'll be honest, I maybe go downtown 5 to 10 times a month, if even that. For me, I love the fact that I have a new house in a suburban community. It just works better for me.

I get the appeal. I love new houses. Big bathrooms. Big closets. Big rooms. Maintenance holiday on oven, dishwasher, hot water tank, windows, roof, siding, plumbing, furnace, etc.
