Flyers name Ron Hextall as GM

			Adam Kimelman @NHLAdamK
Flyers will have 11:30 press conference to announce "front office promotions." Could mean Holmgren to president, Hextall to GM role

In his new role, Holmgren will oversee both the business and hockey operations of the Flyers and will report directly to Flyers Chairman Ed Snider. Hextall will become responsible for the day-to-day management of the Flyers’ hockey operations and will report to Holmgren. Both appointments are effective immediately.

Snider (or Mr. Snider) seemed to be hinting this was going to happen but Holmgrem didn't seem too keen on it. I'll assume the owner won out.

I suspect they had to promote Hextall now, or lose him to another team.

Ha... Snider said a few days ago that it wouldn't happen straight away:

Good day for Flyers fans. Holmgren was well past his expiry date as GM as IMO he turned Islanders/Oilers batty over the past few seasons.

Kind of but I expect this is more similar to the Oilers in that the GM was so bad at his job and the owner just enough of a fan to promote him rather than fire him. The Flyers beat reporter was going on this morning about how the bought out Briere only to hand another bad deal to a guy like Lecavalier that "can't play" (in his words).

Paraphrasing here but a reporter asked him why in his opinion the Flyers haven't won the cup in how ever many years and he said it's hard. They were close a few times but couldn't win the big one. What he is most proud of is the winning culture. Then the good part. He said there's a team out there, not mentioning any names, who's strategy is to be bad and collect first overall picks. Ask their fans how much fun that is

Is there video/audio of him saying this anywhere? Would like to hear exactly what he said/how he said it.
