I know for a fact Kids in Kincora ride a bus to school 30 mins or so very day. In a place like Airdrie kids still walk to school or ride their bikes.
I don't live in Airdrie so I'm not exactly an expert but I don't like big cities other than the odd visit so I find myself defending these guys

Except for the 'parasite' part. Thats kind of big.

There are a lot of intolerant people on this site. I see it in the gear-grinder thread. I can believe the stupid little things that upset some folks. I have family in Airdrie so know it well. I don't like it because of the insane growth rate and the problems that causes, but why pile onto people who choose to live there. I live in a smaller city near a major centre, and it's great.
Live and let live.

So to actually use this thread for what I had originally intended… Just found out that Peppercorn's is closed down temporarily while they move to their new location in Bayside. Always felt the old location was a strange place for a restaurant.

There's an undertone from some posters that they feel they can live other people's lives better, or that they could make life choices better than other posters that's manifested in this discussion.
Some people would rather be shot dead than have to rely on CrossIron Mills as their nearby entertainment or shopping. There are others who are quite fine with that. Doesn't make their lives less important, or less meaningful, just different.

I still think theres a fair amount of resentment regarding the fact that they use infrastructure that they dont pay for.

That's a problem in Calgary as well.
If you live on the outskirts and drive to work downtown or take the train, you are using a ton of infrastructure compared to someone who lives close enough to walk to downtown, yet probably pays double the taxes.
I blame our municipal and provincial governments for not having fair taxation in place.
I'll never question the actions of someone who makes a decision to provide what they deem important to their family and save a buck.
The only actual thing I dislike is people who ignore their actual costs of ownerships for homes and vehicles or the value they put on their time when deciding where to live. Both sides of the debate always ignore the negatives of their situations, and people that are actually up the middle about it and honest about their decisions draw no ire from me.
The rest of it is all for fun. All you have to do is pick up a copy of the Sun or mention you like the Peace Bridge in public to have people jump all over you for sporting an erection at the sound of any word resembling "Nenshi", and it's pretty obvious there is a bit of an inner city vs. suburb/exurb rivalry in Calgary.
I do mostly ignore people that haven't tried both though. I've tried 20km from downtown and 2km from downtown. For myself, and my family, I can definitively say which one works better for us.
Now back to making fun of Airdrie everyone...

Is that really something that people should be able to use to form negative opinions about the character and lives of specific individuals who live in these communities?

What is up with the new 7-11 being there? I found it kinda strange considering they might be 1 KM apart?

Is there, I mean beside in this thread?
Why are Calgarians not up in arms about Cochrane, Okotoks, Bragg Creek, High River, Black Diamond, Turner Valley and every other little town within a 30-60 minute drive. I know people that live in Crossfield and work in downtown Calgary.
People have made a different choice than you, different, not better or worse, but different.

Since when are we not allowed to judge people's choices? You make your way in the world largely by looking at the actions of others, assessing whether what they do/think is right/wrong or good/bad and carry on with your life accordingly. Of course people can make poor decisions. This is the real world, not some hippy commune.

Jokes on you since the money for the Peace bridge came from the provincial government.

You can judge, but you can't definitively say that one is better than the other. To me I have no interest in living in South Africa, it is a #### hole. One of my good mates, thinks it is the greatest place in the world.
The draw and appeal of where one lives is truely subjective, not objective.

Ya, darn those Airdrie folk who drive on the roads in Calgary city limits, they don't pay for them.... And they never spend a penny in Calgary while they're in town, just drive around aimlessly, ruining the roads.
Or what about when they use the city transit systems!!! they don't pay taxes for those, just the regular transit fares, it's rubbish, they're stealing seats from tax payers. And while we're on that note, lets ban tourists, they are a burden on infrastructure too, from now on, proof of residence is required to get into the Stampede. Heck, let's just ban tourism worldwide.
New rule, if you don't pay taxes for it, you're not allowed to touch it.

Deerfoot is still a provincial responsibility, so all Albertans are paying for it. The province is trying to unload it back onto the city, and that comes with all sorts of costs that the city just can't take on at this point. Fun battle.

I think it might be entertaining if all the Calgarians would just shut up in this thread and let the Airdronians discuss all the new and exciting things happening in their city as it was intended. We can use this thread as a kind of social experiment to see how truly boring Airdrie is.
