Two cities widely regarded as "World Class".

I know we have to hate them, and believe me I do, but I'm proud to have those two cities as part of our country. I would assume they are also top two for tourist destinations in Canada.

If you're going to exclude a city for having a skid row then no city in the world, is word class.

I've said it before, I would rag on my friends if they decided to move to Airdrie, but to me it is no different than my friends that live anywhere outside of the inner city.
Calgary to Airdrie is probably no further of a drive Calgary to McKenzie Towne. Airdrie probably has more to do than McKenzie Towne too.

You are missing my point. I am young (29) so moving out to the burbs isn't for me. Some of my friends live out in the burbs though and for most people living in Calgary means living in the burbs which to me is really no different than living in Airdrie.

Question for the pro-Airdrie crowd: if the cost of housing in Airdrie was the same as the cost of housing as "x" suburb in Calgary (since it's the north, I'll suggest Coventry Hills, Panorama Hills, or even a Kincora or Evanston), what would you pick and why?

In other words, aside from a bigger house for the same price (or the same house for cheaper), what does Airdrie have to offer over a comparable North Central suburb?

Eh - I'll bite. To answer your question - nothing. Airdrie provides me nothing significantly more than one of the north central communities. In fact, I moved from Coventry Hills to Airdie. We picked Airdrie because in our search (of both Calgary and Airdrie homes), the home we loved was in Airdrie and cost us $100k less than a comparable house in north central Calgary. I work by the airport so my commute isn't terrible (longer than from Calgary for sure) but the longer commute was worth it to me for the cheaper house, cheaper property tax and bigger yard.

I don't think Airdie is some amazing place that is better than Calgary - there are many things I miss about living in Calgary. But it was the right decision for us and works for where our life is based. We could have moved to some far south suburb of Calgary and my commute would have been longer to where I work - but I would have been in the city (which seems to be amazingly important to some of you.)

I'm not exactly "pro airdrie" I just think its stupid for people to pile on others for where they choose to live...different things are important to different people (bigger house, bigger yard, lower costs, schools, ect.)

I know for a fact Kids in Kincora ride a bus to school 30 mins or so very day. In a place like Airdrie kids still walk to school or ride their bikes.

I don't live in Airdrie so I'm not exactly an expert but I don't like big cities other than the odd visit so I find myself defending these guys

Yeah -- perhaps we need an ongoing Calgary suburb thread

Interesting part to me (bolded above) -- I've read horror stories (on CP no less) about schools having lotteries and people unable to get their kids into an elementary school down the street (and having to bus them instead). Our kids are still a few years away but that would be a huge factor for me...

That's really the heart of the issue. I'm not an Airdrie dweller or pro-Airdrie per se but I'm very much against the sanctimonious attitude expressed in this thread against how other people choose to live their lives.

There's an undertone from some posters that they feel they can live other people's lives better, or that they could make life choices better than other posters that's manifested in this discussion.

Some people would rather be shot dead than have to rely on CrossIron Mills as their nearby entertainment or shopping. There are others who are quite fine with that. Doesn't make their lives less important, or less meaningful, just different.
