There's a difference between having a dress code while on the team clock, or expectations of cleanliness and neatness, and enforcing a choice of style on the team members.

A better parallel would be requiring all players to dye their hair a specific colour. Or those who wear glass to wear horn rimmed glasses. Or requiring all fingernails to be painted a specific colour.

The rule is likely there because it's because long hair used to be associated with a certain social stigma. That stigma either no longer exists, or shouldn't exist, so in either case the rule needs to be depricated.

The Yankees have a no facial hair rule. If they can get guys who make up to $30M per year to keep their hair at an accepted level, these kids should be able to go along with the rule. This kid's mom does seem like she thinks her kid is more special than Derek Jeter though.

This is a kids team not the major leagues.
The manager / coach is just beating his chest and flexing "his" rules.

The whole drinking fountain thing was based around societies ignorant concept that Blacks were disease spreaders and sub human. This has absolutely nothing to do with a coach setting a common dress code or hair code, he's not doing it out of hatred and he's not doing it out of ignorance since I don't see him grumbling that people with long hair are all carrying lice.

He's doing it because he set a common standard for the team. The question is, did the boy know about that rule of the team when he signed up or not? If he knew the rules and signed up and the coach told him to get a hair cut, then he's going out of his way to break the rule, and the kid is in the wrong. If the coach didn't tell him about the hair and dress code when he signed the kid up and then tried to enforce it after the fact then the coach is in the wrong.

Is the idea of a hair cut requirement, archaic, sure, but its a totally minor thing to me, and my sense is suddenly the kid is putting himself above the team rules. Coaches do funny things to build team identities. Does it matter, probably not, but coaches don't bend, they can't make exceptions for players unless that player has a handicap or special need where an exception has to be made.

As far as the hair for cancer, maybe the coach and the players can arrange for a shaving ceremony at the end of the year, or the coach can think its a good idea and encourage all the players to do that. That would get the idea that the kid and his mother are doing this to garner sympathy off of the table and it would be great team building. I mean who doesn't want to shave a team mates head.

Like I said before, I really hate the idea that if I have any kind of dispute with anyone that they're going to run to the internet after recording it and post it up. The mother is plainly wrong on this, she's encouraging cyber bullying in a lot of ways because we know that the Internet loves a mob.

I firmly believe that people should take care of the disagreements on a personal one on one level, that's how trust is created, I'm tired of every slight being recorded and then the we're so smart internet community all flooding in to condemn and scream and bully.

No Puckluck, this isn't comparable to racism in the States, nor the drinking fountain argument. For you to even look at that comparison shows me that you are either trying to get an extreme reaction, or you have a clueless rage sense here.

It is comparable to me and this very same argument has reached the court in the United States for discrimination and guess who won? I can assure you it's not the backward thinking of this coach and some schools in the States.

Whether it's the color of your skin for not getting a job or because you have too many face piercings or you have long hair as a guy. All discrimination. Not on the same levels of course but still comparable.

What if the coach said "Ok, we are going to build unity by all wearing turbans" would you still feel the same way? and you can say "that's extreme" well to this kid and all long haired kids out there, this coach is being extreme.

LOL yeah lets compare a billion dollar industry to this situation.

Even if the players disagree do you think it's worth it to them to speak out when you are making $30 million? Jeez pay me $30 million and I might even shave my legs.

So you compare cutting hair to the oppression of African Americans and the guy who is comparing the same sport at two different skill tiers is the one who is making a reach with the comparison?

I don't agree with either of you but this is getting a little out of hand...

It makes me wonder what would happen if Hitler was asked to guest coach the Tel Aviv Son's of Pitches.

Reminds me of the time my sister got me a job pumping gas at an Esso gas station and on the first day the manager told me I was going to need to get a haircut or it wasn't going to work out. I took pride in my long permed mullet just long enough to cover my name on my hockey jersey. I lasted one afternoon as it turns out I wasn't very good at washing windows either. I gladly moved on to washing dishes at a husky Never mind what coaches want.....what do girls want?

James Hetfeild of Metallica was a really good high school football player...His coach told him to cut his hair or he would be off the team...he told the coach to go #### himself and started one of the top selling bands of all time

Try reading my posts and you'd actually see I never did that.

I first brought it up after someone saying "the rules have always been the same" so that somehow made it right. I simply said the rules were that black people weren't allowed to drink from a white person fountain so we should just keep following outdated rules?

And there are hundreds of levels of discrimination. This is one of them. Like I said not on the same level of the fountain issue but it still is.

You're saying that the Supreme Court heard a case about discrimination over length of hair? Link please.

As far as I know discrimination is illegal in the USA based on certain things, but hair length isn't one of them. Sexual preference isn't even one of them in the Civil Rights Act.

Sure, not letting you into my house because your boots are caked in mud is a form of discrimination as well, by the strictest definition of the word.

But they aren't comparable because some discrimination is justifiable or even preferable. So you are right in that the difference is quantitative rather than qualitative, but the difference is still very meaningful.

I love how you compare it to slavery and say that's completely acceptable, but my point of reference is crazy! If the discussion was what would you do for $30M, I'm sure there are lots of things you'd do. Lots of the players voice their displeasure with the rule, but they still comply. David Price of the Rays said he wouldn't sign with NY because of their shaving rule. Mattingly was benched over it. Here are some more stories on it: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1...famous-staches

My point was merely that the coach was wanting the kids to act like professionals and that nobody is above the team. I simply showed that the most well known team in all of baseball has a very similar hair policy. A sub-point, was that even when you get to the highest level of professional sports, there are still rules to follow. If multimillionaires can follow the rules, there is no reason why kids can't either. Instead of acting like a brat, he could have cut his hair. You often hear "if it's good enough for Iginla/Flames/etc., it's good enough for me". I was trying to put it in the same mold.

I don't have a problem with the coach wanting his players to cut their hair if they want to play on his team. I also don't have a problem with coaches who let their players have long hair. I've played on teams where I had to have my hair cut short. I've worked in many jobs that restricted hair length, jewelry, etc. None of that was a big deal. If I didn't like it, I could have easily not played on that team or worked elsewhere. It's not like the coach is saying the kid has to get a neck tattoo. He's just asking him to trim his hair. I don't think I could ever get that worked up over someone asking me to cut my hair. I just don't see why I'd get upset over a coach asking his players to cut their hair. Sure it's a little old school, but he's the coach.

If you're going to claim I compared it to slavery then quote the post in which I said it. That's right, you can't.
