It seems like this team fires its coach every year.

Hired to be fired. Lots of teams not meeting expectations. Muller didn't do a good enough job there as while that team isn't a cup contender they should be better than where they have finished the past two seasons. I wonder if Trotz's phone is ringing off the hook and how many teams are on a holding pattern waiting on San Jose to make a decisions on their staff.

Brind'Amour gets the friends treatment and stays on? Nothing wrong with that. The rest will land somewhere.

Wouldn't be surprised if SJ and Tor relieve their coaches soon too, Bylsma in Pit if they dont' get far.

Good time to be a highly touted Assistant coach.

I wonder how many of these teams are thinking, "Trotz is available, we'd better fire our guy now so we can take a shot."

I think Muller was out regardless of who was available. I feel he'd be better suited for an assistant position under a better coach.

Everything is falling into place for Carolina and the talks of tearing it all down. Next step comes once the playoffs are over and we get closer to the draft.

Or maybe they're thinking, "if we want Mcdavid or Eichel, we need to get Joe Sacco on he bench immediately!"

That's 34 coaching changes in just over 3 years. Tough gig!

Someone's looking at Wilson apparently:

Darren Dreger@DarrenDreger4 mins
Ron Wilson is getting consideration for another NHL head coaching job. Experience is a big plus for some teams in the market for a coach.

Bob McKenzie
@TSNBobMcKenzie
Ulf Samuelsson, Kevin Dineen and Ed Olczyk will be amongst ex-teammates of CAR GM Ron Francis mentioned as potential coaching candidates.

What a great time for Trotz to be on the market! He is certainly in a nice position right now being able to pick any team he wants from the list of contenders that would be looking to secure his services. Heck, even Tortorella should be able to land another job next season after pocketing his massive contract severance pay.

Ugh the good old cronyism approach of hiring the old gang.

They've been doing it for years... hires from the Karmanos crew, collecting Staals. They just don't have a long enough history to put in full Oiler mode.

I wonder if Troy G Ward is going to get any consideration for any of these open coaching spots.

Bit of a dumb move IMO.

As pointed out on radio today, Kirk Muller had ONE training camp with these guys.

Teams are way way to much in a hurry to fire cioaches these days, there is a lot to be said for continuity, but very few get the opportunity.

He probably did a thorough evaluation of all the players and coaches, and from watching the Canes play this season, I would of fired the staff half way into the season.

Its getting ridiculous where coaches are basically seen as disposable commodities. I wonder what the shift in dynamic is?

Things dont go well? Fire the coach.

Is it that coaches are only learning short-term strategies to motivate teams and players?

I know its easier to fire a coach than it is to overhaul a roster but that doesnt necessarily mean that its right.

I wish I'd thought of becoming Joe Sacco.

"Hire me, I guarantee a high draft pick!"

Its a niche market and hes the only game in town.

Did Torterella get a severance package? My understanding is coaches are owed the rest of their contract as long as they don't get hired somewhere else. If he gets hired to coach somewhere else, the Canucks should be off the hook.

Is this anything new, though?

In 40+ years of Flames hockey, only two coaches have kept their jobs for more than 3 full seasons, Fred Creighton and Bob Johnson.

Muller was the coach in Carolina for two complete seasons and more than half of a third. They missed the playoffs all three years. Unless a team is in a dedicated build/rebuild, it's unlikely for a coach to survive three straight seasons out of the playoffs.
