Try downloading the latest iPod update. http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/

If that doesn't work, run a chkdsk on your ipod.

Start Menu -> Run -> and type chkdsk "iPod drive letter" /F

Since my iPod is the H:\ drive, I would type chkdsk H: /F

You can use a program such as 'PodPlus' which allows you to transfer songs from your iPod to your computer.

To burn mp3 cd's, you can just drag the mp3s to the cd drive in my computer and choose 'Write these files to CD'.

I tend to use Nero to burn my mp3 cds though.

This should work fine.

Are these songs you have purchased from the iTunes Music Store, or songs you have ripped off your own CDs?

Simply resetting might have worked as well. It was probably the reset part of the upgrade that fixed it.

Converting Itunes purchased music to mp3 is a PIA. If you still have Itunes 5, you can use jhymn to convert Itunes purchased music to mp3. Or you can download Itunes 5 and use jhymn. It is the only really easy way I know of.

The other way is to burn audio CDs with the Itunes songs, then convert to mp3s. Huge PIA to convert a lot of songs.

Apple breaking jhymn was enough for me to leave itunes.

The easiest way is to probably re-buy your music in mp3 format from allofmp3.com at a fraction of the price. You can get better quality files from there anyway. emusic.com is also another good source for drm free music, and the money goes to the artists. It is only good for indie music though, and even then doesn't have a huge selection. Not bad though for indie music fans.

Does anyone know what I can do with a broken ipod? It works sometimes, but gives me a sad face most of the time. I want to sell it to someone who thinks they can fix it. Anyone know a website or anything that will buy broken ipods off people?

Apple has a neat after-warranty option where you can send in your old iPod after the warranty has expired and pay a fraction of what a new one would cost and get a new one. Check out their website, it will cost about half of what a new one would.

This may sound a little caveman like, but when it gives you the sad face, try just giving it a hard slap on the side. That's how i fixed mine, hasn't given me trouble since.

There is a website that buys old iPods. Do a search fo iPod replacment parts. Its one of the bigger suppliers. They take damaged ones, repair them and sell them or sells the parts to people.

BTW. Apple had to make serious concessions to the music industry when they launched the music store. Apple doesn't break software and limit the use of files on purpose. Its the music industrys fault that you can't easly burn mp3s from downloaded music from itms. The music industry HATES mp3 file format as it has no DRM. Apple doesn't give a crap if you go to your buddies house and put all your songs from your iPod onto his computer but the music industry does. Apple had to limit the ease in which people could pirate songs purchased from their store in order to land agreements from all the major record labels.

Might be a stupid question but I know nothing of Ipods. Do IPOd's play regular mp3's or just Itune stuff?

Yes, they play regular MP3s*


*MP3s downloaded from some music services will not work.

You don't want to convert m4p files to mp3. m4p is lossy and converting it to mp3 is just degrading the quality even more. It's like making a copy of a cassette then making another copy from that copy. Plus, the conversion process adds approx. 2db, usually resulting in the file clipping. Ends up sounding like total crap.

I've tried that, and everything else known to man. Mine is done for. It worked for a couple of days after I restored it, but It's hooped now for sure. I've already ordered a new one, so now I just wanna get any money back I can.
