Kanzig and Klimchuk aren't dressing in the AHL playoffs.... extremely long odds they get games in the NHL next year.

Looking at these lists just seems to highlight that we need to trade some forward depth for defensive help.

Granlund is a player. Can't see any reason he doesn't make the Flames next year and sticks. Nothing wrong with your thought about him developing another year, but based on the little bit we saw of him, I think he sticks for sure. He did not look out of place at all.

Definitely. There's no way they'll be able to ice more than a few rookies unless they massively overpay someone to sit in the pressbox. I really think Granlund, Baertschi, Wotherspoon, Gaudreau, Poirier and Knight have legit chances to make the NHL next season, but because of the cap floor maybe 2 of them will get a chance to start the season.

I'm in the Gaudreau makes the starting lineup camp.

Just cause he's not a perfect NHL player that rocks all three zones doesn't mean he should be sent down. If he plays like he did his first game, I just don't see the point of him going down. He'll learn more and learn it from better teachers playing with the big club.

Obviously, if he does struggle or if it seems like he is a step behind you send him down but the hope is he can maintain how he played in his first game. The difference between his first game and Svens first few games were that Johnny stood out with his play. He played fantastic. Sure Sven scored, but he didn't seem like he stood out as much as Johnny.

We shall see. Exciting times ahead.

Given the Flames have to hit the floor, I can't see them carrying too many ELCs next year.

I'll go with:

Monahan
Granlund
Reinhart

I think Reinhart and Gaudreau will both start on the Flames next season - possibly adding Granlund to that as well.

Biggest question is around Gaudreau. I think he will show enough during camp and the preseason to earn his spot on the team - that is all he has to do, and I think he will do it. The Flames will not send him down if he is outplaying others and showing that he deserves a spot. However, I can see him running out of gas at the dreaded 40 game mark as NCAA players have experienced.

If 6 of the Flames top 9 are rookies on opening night, Buffalo will have some stiff competition in the McDavid sweeps.

Realistically - Monahan and Baertschi should start with the team. Gaudreau will get a good look. Everyone else would have to earn a call up.

I'm thinking 5 of the ELC crew make the team out of camp: Monahan, Gaudreau, Baertschi, and Reinhart at forward, and Wotherspoon on defence.

Glencross - Stajan - Hudler
Gaudreau - Backlund - D. Jones
Baertschi - Monahan - Colborne
Bouma - Reinhart - McGrattan

Extra: Byron

Giordano - Brodie
Russell - Wideman
Smid - Wotherspoon

This is assuming that Colborne, Byron, and Bouma are all qualified as RFA's, and Galiardi is not. Also assuming that Cammalleri, Westgarth, and Butler are not re-signed as UFA's.

There is also the chance that the #4 overall pick this year can make this team as well, similar to Monahan. Competition will be tough for a max of 2-3 roster spots at most I think.

Dialing my expectations dial back from "Recklessly Optimistic" to "Cautiously Optimistic", probably only Monahan - Reinhart/Granlund/both will start in the NHL.

That team wouldn't make the cap floor.

Locks: Monahan
Strongest contenders: Granlund, Baertschi, Reinhart, Wotherspoon, Gaudreau
Have a chance: Ferland, Knight, Sieloff, Poirier, Arnold, Agostino, Hanowski
Very slim chance: the rest

I doubt Kanzig plays a game next year, I think he will likely be back in Victoria as a 20 year old as well, then in 2016/2017 start playing pro, his footspeed is very very slow.

Highly unlikely he'd go back as a 20 year old. Doesn't make much sense.

I tried to envision the lines for both the Flames and their AHL squad for next year and it's very crowded up front...I could see the Flames making a couple of trades for guys that they may feel are redundant with the depth we have in the system (a la Horak last year).

That said, I think Monahan and Reinhart will definitely make the team. After that, it's a good bet that Wotherspoon and one of Gaudreau/Baertschi/Granlund make the team. My bet is on Baertschi as long as he has a good camp. Hanowski has an outside shot only because he is potentially a better fit as a 4th line/utility guy that slots in and out of the lineup than any of the others.

I am going to be very excited to see our AHL squad this year too. We could roll 4 very exciting lines!

The pipeline is getting crowded, in another year it's gonna be fish or cut bait with a few of these guys. More along the lines of our older prospects like Cundari, Hanowski, Breen, Agostino and Knight. If they can't make the jump, they'll be clogging up development opportunities for the new kids coming up, especially after this draft is completed.
