Baertschi + 4th overall pick( Dal Colle, Drassitle)
For
1st overall pick (Ekblad, Rienhart, Bennett
)
Sounds like a solid trade...something Burke or Trevilling would do

If Sven turns into the player he can be we lose that trade pretty badly. I am not opposed to moving anybody not named Gaudreau, Porier, Monahan, Baertschi, and Giordano.

Having a player with Giordano's development curve might be useful for mentoring someone like Ekblad. An undrafyed player that left for Russia became captain and arguably a #1 defender on nearly any given team.

Trading Giordano makes no sense. Never go full Oiler. Gio's the perfect captain for our youngsters. Gio/Monahan probably our only untouchables.

Or you could look at it another way. When he says he thinks of Erik Johnson he could also be referring to a similarity to the 2006 entry draft top five. Erik Johnson went #1, but Jordon Staal went #2, Jonathan Toews went #3, Nicklas Backstrom went #4 and Phil Kessel went #5. I'd take every single one of those forwards over Erik Johnson. I'm almost thinking the same about Ekblad this time around. If I have #1 I don't use it on a defenseman unless he is heads and tails above everyone else. Ekblad doesn't look to be that player.

What the hell?

Look at draft trade histories. It doesn't cost teams top prospects to move up like that. All it usually costs to move up is adding another pick, like a late a 2nd rounder or something.
Is sven really a TOP prospect considering he was demoted to the AHL, I think sometimes we overvalue players

You nailed it here I think. The question is can we put together a package that is attractive enough and would it be the best offer. Florida wants to be better now and needs a reasonable budget.

If a 1st rounder is needed to get it done, maybe they would consider our 2016 pick when added to a package of players that make them better now. I would offer Wideman with salary retained as part of the package as well - he is still a very good player that would make them better now.

Wideman, Hudler, Baertchi, High 2nd, 2016 1st?

3) Don't understand those posters who think we don't have the pieces to trade for the #1 pick outright. We're as flush with quality prospects as we've ever been in the last 20 years

To go to the extreme end, would Tallon be able to turn down an offer of:
Hudler
Brodie
one of Baertschi/Gaudreau
one of Backlund/Granlund
one of Wotherspoon/Sieloff
plus a high 2nd rounder

for the #1 overall?

I don't see how he could turn down an offer like that. It's an overpayment from us so you can dial it back from there but the Flames can afford to do a bit of a quantity for quality type deal where we give up 4 attractive pieces for the #1. So to say we don't have the pieces required to trade for the pick outright seems a bit silly.

No idea what pieces Tallon values most but if he happens to value a few of our undersized forwards/forward prospects then we could make a really franchise changing move by switching them + other pieces to get a big 6'4 pillar defenseman to help anchor our defense for the next decade.

Personally I don't want to give up Brodie, Gaudreau and Poirier in particular. But some combination of Baertschi, Backlund, Granlund, Wotherspoon, Klimchuk, Reinhart, 2nd rounders, etc should be attractive especially if he likes one of our tradeable vets in addition.

Treliving and Burke should definitely be all over this IMO. Getting 2 of the top 4 guys in this draft including Ekblad would be ridiculous going forward and we have the depth to be able to make a competitive offer without completely depleting our system.

perhaps not for another prospect in the oiler system, but given the oilers need to start making a push for the playoffs, you have to figure a guy like eberle is available

Why would Giordano waive his NMC to go to Florida anyways?

Maybe it's just me but I'm not all that excited by Ekblad. If I was trading up it would be to guarantee the center of my choice would be my pick. I'd rather trade up for Hanifin in next year's draft.

Silly argument. Every draft is a unique and special snowflake. The 2006 entry draft is not doomed to endlessly repeat throughout time. Ekblad is not E. Johnson and the 2014 draft is not the 2006 draft. People make too much of the historical argument, it's a pretty bad one.

Probably wouldn't and no GM would take that big of a risk. Its just what a bunch of bored hockey fans wonder about while pretending to work in our cube farms.

With how Treviling gushed about Gio, he's not going anywhere. Plus, if you were going to get Ekblad, you'd want him being mentored by Giordano.

I think we overvalue our prospects, especially Sven. I don't see Sven, Granlund, or Gaudreau all becoming the next Patrick Kane and it's clear that this management team wants to bulk up. Who knows if any of those players become regular NHLers? Other than Monahan or Brodie, I wouldn't be opposed to trading any other young player.

That being said, if you actually listened to the interview, Tallon said he wanted players to help them win now. He specifically said they have enough young players and he wanted experienced NHLers to help bring them along.

Way more interesting is the idea of getting FLA's pick without giving up the Flames 1st this year or next.

But if they want help now, the math doesn't work I doubt Wideman, Hudler and Glenx (assume waive NTC) would be enough. Even with salary retained on Wideman.

Also if Camm and Wideman both go, Flames will have to pay silly money to a UFA to get to the floor. Consensus is the top UFAs won't want to be here.

I've said this before this season, but Giordano's value has never been as high as it is now. For a franchise that has historically be unable/unwilling to cash in on player values, I would not have an issue with the Flames exploring the possibilities of moving Gio. This is not to say I would move Gio for #1 but I certainly would have the conversation and see where it goes.

He's a fan fav. He's the captain and had a great season and according to all reports is a great leader in the room. You just don't trade guys like that. Not when you are trying to build a winning room and environment. You don't make a guy the captain and then trade him because he's been a good leader and has great value now. That sounds like something the Oilers would do.

Florida, much like Edmonton and the NYI, are all under pressure to win now. For this reason I don't think they are good trading partners for eachother, and I don't think it will take another 1st round pick to trade up.

To be more clear, Florida wants to win now. They have what I call the "Luongo window".

I would give up any two (possibly three) of Sven, Granlund, Backlund, Hudler(50% salary), and Wideman(50% salary).

The opportunity to add a top pair defenseman and a top 6 center will speed up this rebuild dramatically. I could see playoffs in 2016.
