I suppose it's been mentioned, but the great Peter Maher's last goal call was Johnny Gaudreau! It seems to be everything Johnny touches is great.

Peter was and still is great and always will be. Johnny probably can't up the goal call, but knowing him, he will in the future, in the form of a game winning goal in one form or another. I think very highly of the two, in different ways, one as a broadcaster and one as a player and potential, but both very highly skilled.

Peter has one up on you though, Johnny. Peter is just a little more polished. I can't put into words completely, but one Great calling another potential budding star's first goal and last goal call at the same time from the Hfo'r..well..maybe it is meant to be.

All the best Pete. We all love you!

Since they're posting Loubardias' job also, I'm going to say that either:

(a) He's a favourite for the job so they're posting his just in case
(b) He's getting the TV gig
(c) They told him he's not getting the play-by-play job so he's moving on

Had a cursory look for links but did HNiC mention anything about Peter's retirement/career?

When Brad Curle left the play by play job for the Lethbridge Hurricanes to take on the Hitmen's play by play job, it was said that he'll be waiting in the wings to take over for Peter Maher when Peter retires. Now, that was a long time ago so a lot could change, but I would be pleased with Curly doing Flames pbp.

I was driving through Chicago last night and figured I'd listen to the Min-Chi game. Without getting into too much detail, what Peter Maher brought to the table for Flames fans was pure class. There is nothing more annoying than listening to an incredibly homer broadcast, featuring complaining about reffing, screaming when the home team scores, etc.. Even the small details like mentioning the score and time frequently is missed in other broadcasts.

It has been a great pleasure listening to Maher over the last number of years, and I have many fond memories of falling asleep at night with my alarm clock as low as possible so as not to gain the attention of my parents. I myself will miss Peter, and I think the industry just lost a heavy weight that can't be replicated.

Best of luck Peter!

His last goal call was Yannick Webber, as the Canucks scored afterwards.

Last Flames goal though.

You know we're talking about Rogers here, right? Do you seriously think it is reasonable to expect a company that is broadcasting the majority of pro hockey in this country to actually scout for on-air talent?

You'd definitely expect this to be one of those insider, word-of-mouth, job hires. It definitely comes across as a little mickey-mouse. But maybe Rogers is looking to hire someone straight out of SAIT this time.

Agreed.

It honestly seems like Rogers execs just heard Maher's retirement speech and thought that maybe they could have lightning strike again, since Pete originally got the Leafs job because he answered a newspaper ad (which is not the way you should be doing business today).

They're probably going over local highschool lunchtime AV club footage. If you get 'em before post secondary you hit what Sportsnet refers to as the "kid savings"!

It's usually policy on large, publicly traded corporations that they post openings. Whether they already have someone lined up or not, this happens a lot.

Exactly, doesn't hurt to accept resumes just in case a diamond in the rough comes along.

They do...but this job posting allows guys from ALL sports to know it's open.

It really is not uncommon for these things to be posted publically.

I remember Peter stating one time that mentioning the score was something he thought it was important to do very frequently. It got to the point that people would say that he did it too much, but it's those little things that made him the broadcaster he is (not to mention a Hall of Famer).

To Peter, broadcasting was not so much a job, but a duty and responsibility -- to do it well and to do it the right way.

I thought it was petty neat that they had an open job posting for this, kinda was curious about what they would look for in a play by play radio guy now its nice to have a better idea of it.
