Fair enough, if the new coach has final say that would make more sense.

Have to admit that I think it's a good move by the 'nucks to fire him. The market for coaches is good at the moment and rather than sticking with the ###### for the remainder of the contract they saw it wasn't working and terminated it at a preferable time when there are alternatives available. I am however glad they're stuck paying him for a few more years.

I just hope they fail to land a better replacement at this point. Puck 'em.

I thought Torts did well on the TSN panel. He seemed to provide calm insight which was very different than what I think TSN thought was going to happen. I think they thought they would get a lot of Brian Burke type opinions. Burke had left to Anaheim after the lockout and Torts replaced, before being hired mid season to New York.

Never mind went to Youtube and discovered lots of entertaining opinions of Torts while on the TSN panel. Wasn't the calm cool collected type I thought I remembered on TSN..... oh well.

Calling it here. Todd McLellan will coach the Canucks next season after San Jose fires him.

So of course I had to search for Torts moments on TSN. Found a few, but also really enjoyed this extended interview James Duthie did with him. Mind you this is well before his suspension and the resulting Canucks free-fall - if this interview was scheduled in March, say, I'm sure it would have been very different.

Now that he's gone from Vancouver I find myself wanting him to land on his feet with another NHL job somewhere...

I mentioned that last night on San Jose - LA playoff thread.

Anyways, Torts must be laughing all the way to the bank now. He doesn't even need to work for the next 4 years since he is still getting paid by the Canucks.

I'm disappointed that Torts got fired. It's like your favorite comedy show coming to an end. The final episode was disappointing, would have been much more entertaining if got fired 20 games into the next season.

Hmmmm, McKenzie disagrees with the previously reported payout:

Likely already mentioned but I was far from impressed by Linden. Doesn't exude the knowledge and confidence that Burke/Treliving do and I think he knows he's already in over his head.

I agree, he better get a top notch experienced GM and let him do what he wants.

Personally I'm hoping he hires Feaster.

Linden is a fan favourite and a local hockey treasure. He's going to be the pretty face of a likely ugly rebuild.

I watched this before I went to bed, and then came here to post the same thing. He looks and sounds overwhelmed in a position for which he is not well trained, and it shows—I was very surprised when he appeared before cameras, looking about 15 years older than he did the last time I saw him—much less than 15 years ago.

From everything he said, and from his answers to questions, it seems pretty clear that the plan moving forward is to continue to supplement the existing core, and to get back to whatever it was that made them successful in 2010–11. Linden mentioned a few times that the team was constructed to play a certain style, and alluded to problems with the coaching, noting that the plan is to return to an "exciting style" of play that proceeds from their strengths.

This all sounded like very good news to me as a Flames fan. But were I a fan of the Canucks, I would be really concerned.

Well Linden is 43. There is often a big difference between being in your late 20s early 30s and 43. I think its too early for Canucks fans to be concerned. It sounds like Linden is looking for a good talent evaluator who can run the show. The President doesnt need to make it his team where he is going to have the final say in everything. He can hire a GM who he lets run the team with close to full autonomy.

I'm not talking about a dramatic change in his appearance from when he was in his thirties, I'm talking about change within the past calendar year.

The parts that Canucks fans should be concerned about are the following two issues: 1) Linden seems convinced about the current core, and basically states that his plan is to supplement and build around the Canucks existing players. 2) Most disconcerting, he intends to make changes that will result in a return to a more "high energy" and "more exciting" style of play. In other words, he seems to believe that this IS the same team that played in the SCF in 2011, and he further believes that they can return to that level through smaller changes to style and structure.

I think it is clear to those who have watched this team closely for the past few seasons that their issues are MUCH deeper than those that Linden has highlighted. He is talking about coaching problems, and does nothing at all to acknowledge that the Canucks are constructed around a rapidly ageing core.

Poor guy learned nothing from the Flames. Supplementing a declining core is a sure fire way to crash and burn into a scorched earth rebuild. Asking aging, declining players to replicate their play of their prime years to provide that same exciting hockey is also a recipe for disaster. Linden needs to look past just this years stats to see that the team was declining under AV and it's simply not feasible to expect the same level of play as the way they were constructed three years ago especially now goaltending isn't a backbone of the team.

This is the potential pitfall of hiring a guy with zero management experience as he's acting more like a fan than an objective manager that knows that the style of play is dictated by the current talent/skills of your roster not how it was built years ago.

And a big LOL for him looking at coaches before hiring a GM. This whole thing is so Oilers.
