Re-sign

or the AHL despite himself.

“@Real_ESPNLeBrun: Halak's agent Allan Walsh and the Isles have already had a brief conversation about wanting to get a contract done. Mutual interest there..”

Isles goalies under contract next season: none
Isles goalies RFA this summer: Anders Nilsson, Kevin Poulin
Isles goalies UFA this summer: Jaroslav Halak, Evgeni Nabokov

no idea what Nabokovs plans are, but after all, he turns 39 this July. Potentially, if Nilsson indeed goes back to Sweden and Halak tests the market, they could still end up with Kevin Poulin and nobody else. Really need to re-sign Halak now and I'm sure he's interested. Not many other teams can offer him a clear #1 spot like the Isles can

Must be Leo. These are the moments Burke shines. Time to pick off the acting GM.

This trade makes Burke's Berra trade look even more ridiculous.

I wonder if Moulson will sign back with the Isles to play with Tavares again. I hope so, as this should improve them next year (assuming they give up the 2015 1st round pick). Last thing I'd want is for Buffalo to have 2 top 5 draft picks for next year.

I heard some where Garth Snow commenting on the trade for Vanek and he attributed trading Moulson to the fact that he was an asset that he had no intentions of retaining so he didnt have a problem trading him even though he was a contributor and had chemistry with Tavares...

Snow didnt want to re-sign Moulson to begin with so i doubt he comes back

If Halak signs this is a good trade for them, he's a talented goalie.

Islanders do need to replace Moulson though. Ought to go hard after a guy like Cammy or Michalek if they want someone who ought be cheaper. One of those guys + Halak + Strome + maybe #5 overall + full year from Tavares and they can contend for a playoff spot (or at least a high enough placement to justify taking #5 this year).

Not really. The Islanders traded for a pending UFA in the off-season. Berra was a RFA traded during the season.

The chances of a 4th round pick playing 200 NHL games is 9%
(1 in 11)

The chances of getting a Brodie is less than 5% (quite a bit less). If you can get a player that will help your team for a 4th round pick, it is an absolute no brainer, you do it every time thing.

If the Islanders sign him (and I think that is a safe bet), this is a great trade for them. They will keep their pick this year for sure and try to make the playoffs. Adding Halak increases their chances significantly.

The UFA goalie market is flooded this year - Miller, Hiller, Emory, Elliott, Tim Thomas, even McElhinney would be an upgrade for them, add if the fact that any of these goalies would most likely be an unchallenged starter should make Islanders an attractive UFA destination without giving up a pick for a player that might not sign

Agreed, especially when you can get a goalie of the caliber of Halak. Not saying he's elite but he'll be great for the Isle of they do sign him. Goalies take long to develop so a fourth for a quality goalie? yes please.

I think it does.

Halak has had continual success in the NHL for over 7 years and is only 28 years old. The Isles must've known they had a good chance of signing him before they traded for him.

Berra had terrible stats with the Flames in his first NHL season and is 27 years old.

I am not sure why the Islanders would give up a pick for Halak at this point. Try to sign him on July 1 for nothing. They could even negotiate early with the new CBA rules to get the contract firmed up before July 1.

The Islanders must really like him to give away an asset for essentially negotiation rights.

I'm guessing the trade has something to do with this:

if they felt that they had to get his rights to stop someone else getting them, and that he signs on as a #1 goalie...then a 4th rounder is probably cheap.

If however he doesn't sign, or would have signed anyways to be a #1 goalie as a UFA on July 1, then that is throwing away a 4th round pick.

I thought that it was alot for a UFA, but if they can get Halak signed without UFA impacts, then probably a good deal.

If Oates hadn't been fired already I might agree.

OT but how is it teams can trade while the playoffs are on? Why wouldn't Boston offer their 1st rounders to Nashville for the next 5 years to get Weber and guarantee the Cup?

I'm obviously missing something here but if someoene knows the regulations governing trades during playoffs I'd be keen to hear. Thanks.
