Default 1st round 2012 & 2013 Entry Re-Drafts

I was looking for the date that the Hockey News 2014 Draft Preview was going to be on the shelves and came by these recent articles on how hindsight re-orders the 1st round for the 2012 and 2013 Entry Drafts (which includes part of the second). A couple of notes is that present NHL's automatically jump to the top of the list leaving the non-NHLer's to be sorted after and it is based on a panel's review and I did not try too hard to dig into their credentials (I just thought it may be interesting for some discussion).

2013
http://www.thehockeynews.com/blog/how-would-the-2013-nhl-draft-unfold-if-we-held-it-again-today/
Couple of interesting things here:
-Nurse is the 5th highest rated defenceman, ranked here at 17th,
-Hudson Fasching raises to the 33rd spot (taken 118th by Los Angeles),
-Emile Poirier slots into the 23rd spot (taken by the Flames at 22), although at 22 this was a bit of a surprise during the draft, not so much based on this. Button and the rest of the scouting staff identified the talent appropriately.
-Hunter Shinkaruk plays only 18 games due to hip surgery and places 21st
-The 26th to 29th slip out of the first round, which includes Klimchuck.

2012

2012 is not as interesting because it is 2 years out and there are 11 NHLer’s reducing the amount of players involved in placement
-nice to see Jon Gillies at 30th, the biggest gain on the list after being drafted 75th
-Griffen Reinhart at 14 stands out a bit.
-Though Grigorenko would have slipped a bit more.
-Not surprised that Jankowski falls out of the 1st round and he is not the only one.

Shinkaruk ahead of Poirier. Are you kidding me?

Klimchuk is understandable, but only cause he was 28th and suffered injuries. But still had a decent season.

So essentially Shinkaruk loses an entire year of development, yet manages to be higher on this list than his actual draft position? Interesting......

As for the Flames' guys, it's nice to see Poirier slot in at 22. I think it was Sureloss that pointed out the Poirier pick was more of a "reach" than the Jankowski pick (based on various pre-draft rankings).

Gillies has put together a couple of very impressive seasons since being drafted. Even then I'm surprised to see him rank as a 1st rounder here.

Shinkaruk ahead of Poirier? Laughable.

I like that jump for Hudson Fasching, seeing as he is now a Sabres prospect.

A write up summarizing why a player gained/dropped would be helpful. It just feels like they are picking names out of a hat. Also would be interested in a redraft of those player in the NHL. Guessing Yak isn't first?

While I totally agree that poirier should be ahead of shinkaruk and I also think shinkaruk should have dropped out of the top 20.... I think their reasoning would be that he was originally projected to go in the top 15 so they think he is better than where he was actually drafted at... Which he is not.

I find their methodology of ranking all NHL players ahead of the rest to be a bit of a copout or shortcut. Still interesting. Certainly very debateable and I'm sure there's little consensus on these types of lists.

Interesting to see Petan as a riser as it sounds like he was the guy we would have taken if Klimchuk had been gone or if we'd had an early 2nd rounder. He was interviewed in Calgary along with Poirier and Klimchuk.

These are strange and frustrating 'articles' by THN; and in my opinion, they are also great examples of why THN is not really relevant anymore. This is the type of interesting idea that they should be devoting a bit more time and effort into. Instead, we just get a strange list with no explanation of their reasoning or methodology.

For example instead of just putting "Six NHLers" in the number 1 spot, how about some discussion about the order they would likely go in right now. To me, that seems like the obvious, most interesting angle to this 'article'. And yet, they just gloss over it and jump right into their strange list.

Bah... waste of my time.
