Hartley may not have shown any hatred towards Tortorella, but I'm sure he's cracking open a bottle of champagne right now. He knows that he played a fairly big role in Tortorella's demise. The downward spiral this season has got to make it MUCH harder for Tortorella to find another NHL coaching position moving forward.
Also, hopefully this renewed rivalry with the Canucks remains even with the mad dog out of the picture.

When did this happen? Just curious.
I know Kuzma wrote an article in the Province speculating about that, but I didn't know Conroy said that.

I think it was from the same interview with Warrener where we all decided that we weren't sure if we liked Rhett's voice or not...
I didn't listen to the interview, this is what I remember from the thread. I think getbak posted it.

Is it not a little odd that a green president like Linden would be looking at possible head coaches before hiring a GM?

It should be a long time before Torts finds another job. Why would a team risk bringing someone on board now who players seem to dislike, who seems to destroy a team's offence, and who is probably more suited to being a WWE manager than an NHL head coach? He was an embarrassment to the game, and his antics got Hartley fined for no good reason (seriously, Hartley has started his 4th line many times this season previous to that game, and afterwards - there is a difference between 'setting the tone' for the game, and 'inciting a brawl', but apparently Butler is some awesome secret weapon in Hartley's pocket).
This guy is a complete clown, and I can't believe people are stating he was a good coach. He sucks, plain and simple. He tries to get the media to focus on him rather than the players. Many coaches do this - Darryl Sutter was and is awesome at this still - but he goes so above and beyond that it turns into a complete circus.
The better question to ask is not which team would take a chance on him, but what WWE Superstar will he be managing next year?
Really sorry to see him leave Vancouver. My best hope is that Edmonton fires Eakins and the teams exchange coaches.

It's truly amazing what's happened to this franchise. In the summer of 2011, they were within one win of a Stanley Cup. Fast-forward three years and they've fired two coaches, a General Manager and President, and the team is a smoldering wreck like the cars outside Rogers Arena on June 15, 2011, the day this whole thing started to fall apart.

But, as noted, if his buyout is only $1.6 million, that's a pretty good escape clause for the Canucks.
As it is, Tortorella made $3.6 million for one terrible year with the Canucks. I'd say it is near impossible to spin the buyout into a win for the Canucks based on this.

I'm just shocked that he agreed to such a cheap buy-out clause. Its strange to see such a low-ball number on such a long contract especially one that made Torts tied at the top as the highest paid coach in the league.
I dont figure that someone gets to be among the top paid coaches in the league if they arent in demand.
Just weird. I cant believe someone would agree to that in a long-term contract. Whats the point?

Does he really destroy a team's offense? The Lighting were a pretty high scoring team when he was head coach and the Rangers weren't but they haven't been any more prolific under AV which debunks that myth. I think he's taking way too much blame for a rapidly declining group of players with the Canucks. The signs of the decline were all there in AV's last season with them as all their star players declined the year before Torts came on board and this season was simply more decline combined with injuries. There seems to be this illusion amongst Canucks fans that a new coach will walk in and they will go back to being one of the top scoring teams in the league again and all will be well. That's simply not going to happen and the goaltending situation is worse than Calgary and Edmonton to boot.
How can you say he's not a good head coach? As a full time head coach he's made the playoffs 8/12 seasons. He's won a cup and has won his first round playoff series 50% of the time which would put him in the Flames HOF.
Nobody is saying he's the best coach in the game but the guy clearly knows how to coach. He's clearly got some temper issues and hasn't made any friends in the media and that's all on him for sure and nobody is debating that. Bottom line though is he has proven to be a decent head coach over his career.

I think Benning is all but hired, probably waiting until the season is done before they announce.
If they are firing torts and have fired Gillis, I think they probably have a few ducks lined up already to replace them.

Never underestimate the power of bluster and arrogance to cloud someone's mind, especially a 'prove you wrong' type of mentality that seems to figure strongly in Tortorella's psyche.
It's the same thing Hartley took advantage of.

Do you guys think he'll find another NHL job soon? I still think he's a pretty good coach but has a short shelf life because of the way he coaches.
I would never want him near Calgary but I could see another team giving him a shot.

Well, if his wildly inexpensive release clause is any indication then there wasnt a whole lot of interest in him last off-season, one would suspect that there would be even less now.

Unless there's a team out there looking for a drama queen/circus sideshow I don't see him getting hired any time soon. This season didn't do him any favours.
