Default OFFICIAL FIFA World Cup 2006 Thread

It's matchday one and the excitement is building as the four year wait is down to 2hrs and some odd minutes. Germany and Costa Rica open the tournament and although highly unlikely I'm hoping for an upset, most of all I'm just hoping for a great start to this tournament.

Michael Ballack, Gemany's captain and perhaps best playmaker might miss the game due to injury.

On a sidenote, Wayne Rooney is match fit and awaiting the go ahead from team doctors. Although for England fans this is great news another possible injury might just damper just spirits...Steven Gerrard. As of right now there isn't much to report about Gerrard's injury except that Ericksson is saying that both Rooney and Gerrard are 50-50 for England's opener on Saturday.

I can't wait until kickoff. Here's hoping for a great game.

I'll be watching the Germany-Costa Rica match over lunch hour today to whet my appetite for some World Cup. I'm not a huge soccer fan, but I certainly enjoy watching this tournament. I'm looking forward to the England-Paraguay match tomorrow. I am going to get up early and watch it.

I read yesterday that we wouldn't see Rooney until after the group stage; has this been changed recently?

1-1, this game is crazy. Although that should've been an offside call on the goal.

I love upsets, I'm a neutral in that game, but have to say I enjoy watching Germany lose.

Kevanguy, are you going to any pubs for the England home games (ie: Swe - Eng 20JUN 12PM MST)?

Is this ever going to calm down? 2-1 Germany. Jeez, I didn't think there'd be this many goals in the game, let alone inthe first 16 minutes.

Great first half to start the world cup. 2-1 score line for the host team and plenty more chances for the Germans to score as well.

I thought it was on side. Germany is living dangerously with the off-side trap, and were almost caught out on two other occassions.

Cool, I'll likely spread it out too and go to the Ship, Rose & Crown, or Bottlescrew Bills. We'll see you out there!

Whoa, the first Costa Rica goal looked okay but I am not so sure that one was onside.

Still a close game... 3-2 right now at the 76th minute. Germany has been by far the better team, but Costa Rica has really capitalized on what few chances they've had.

If Costa Rica can keep..whoa, great save on the corner there!...capitalizing on so few chances I guess it wouldn't be crazy to think they might just go through.

WANCHOPE! Candidate for the golden boot with his second goal?

Great goal by Frings makes it 4-2 (but 10 minutes earlier he was near death and almost removed on a stretcher - man, I hate the play-acting in football).
