Any time I didn't have cable or couldn't be bothered to turn on the tv or was in a place with no tv it was Peter Maher saving the day with his amazing play by play on the radio. So many times even with cable I would prefer to listen to Peter on the radio. Good luck Pete, you were among the best we've ever seen and I hope you truly enjoy your retirement!
Wow, this stings. Peter Mahr was a staple to Flames hockey, all those years from 66CFR before FAN960. While I miss players like Iginla, Fleury and Regehr, in my eyes, players still come and go but Peter Mahr was the constant. Whether it was his PBP or his 5:30 insider..... he was a classic, him and Ed Whalen were gold.
I really hope the next guy brings a classic personality like him with the genuine enthusiasm, not the screaming over the top annoying personalities like they have these days.

And before that, QR77, and before that, my gosh – I remember listening to Peter Maher on CHQR when it was broadcasting on 810.
I do wish Peter the very best in his retirement, good health and long life, and may he be half an hour in Heaven before the Devil knows he's dead. But right now, I'm feeling older than dirt, and I think I shall retire to my room and contemplate my mortality.
Thanks for 34 years of wonderful memories, Mr. Maher.

Sad newsto say the least. All the best to you Pete, you're a true hall of famer and you deserve it.I'll never forget the game 6 call of Gelinas scoring the winner in overtime against the wings. I still get goosebumbs to this day. You can put it in the win column!
I liked the part of the speech when he said that his mom told him that he was going to be a broadcaster when he grew up, then he followed that up by saying that she also predicted we would look at each other on a screen when we talked on the phone... and we all do that now.
Being an out of town Flames fan, especially going back to the time before video streaming, he was a staple in my life for several years. His voice, along with that Japanese Village commercial are burned into my brain permanently.

A true Calgary legend. Growing up when the Flames first came to Calgary, I used to put on headphones between periods of my own hockey games just so that I could listen to Peter and find out how my beloved Flames were doing. When I lived away from Calgary for a few years, hearing Peter or Ed Whalen clips used to ease the pains of being away. The best radio play by play guy I've ever heard. He will be dearly missed.
