Well considering Treliving is the only name we've heard being interviewed, there's a good bet he's the guy. Obviously it's possible we haven't heard of of all the interviews, but everything seems to leak nowadays.

At least it's not McPhee. Thank god.

Finger cooking with Treliving it is then! I like it if that's who it is. I wasn't opposed to McPhee but I like the idea of having a fiscally responsible GM who knows drafting and works hard.

I was looking at the Yotes drafting history the last few years. It doesn't look that great.

Who cares. That team should be in the row of NHL dumpster fires with Edmonton, Florida, Buffalo and the Islanders with what they've gone through off the ice. Instead, they've nearly made it to the Stanley Cup finals.

Maloney knows how to do things the right way. If Treliving approaches his job the same way, with the resources he has at his disposal here, he's going to be successful.

I just hope he doesn't want to recreate the Phoenix coaching style. I'd put my head in the oven if I had to watch that style of play.

I might have missed it, but why is Trevling a sexy pick? (I'm not saying I hate it)

I see he's a hard worker, worked under tough budget constraints in PHX... but whats so great about him?

There is a lot more involved in drafting than just the GM. A great draft involves a lot of different people.

You answered your own question. Hard worker (it trickles down) and has done a lot with the bare minimum.

He's not "sexy" but he'd be solid.

If it's Treliving, it makes a ton of sense. He's part of the pool of 5 or so up-and-coming candidates (alongside Futa, Benning, Fenton, Hextall), from which it is pretty clear Burke wants to make the hire. He's worked under extreme circumstances in Phoenix and found success, showing patience and creativity along the way. All reports say he's a tremendously hard worker. He's paid his dues, cutting his teeth with the Central Hockey League, then 7 years with Maloney in Phoenix. He's clearly ready.

Beyond his resume, he's got ties to Western Canada, and has helped build a team in Phoenix that plays a Brian Burke brand of hockey. Seems a logical and shrewd hire. If not in Calgary, he'll likely get hired elsewhere this summer.

Having said all this, the lid has been pretty gawdammed tight on this GM search, so I wouldn't be surprised if they hire someone else, e.g. Futa.

EDIT: came across this Jason Gregor interview with Treliving from about 3 weeks ago, gives some insight into his approach to building a team: http://www.jasongregor.com/april-2-2...-bryan-berard/

In the interview, he states that the 'Yotes aren't a team that spends to the cap, and rather they try and build through means of hard work, character, development, and commitment to the vision.

It would be interesting to see what he can do in a market that can spend to the cap. Burke has already been given the green light by Edwards to do so.

Edit: Treliving also mentions the triple threat needed when building a team. "Size, Strength, and Speed." All of which match what Burke has been preaching. (Obviously skill needs to be present).

Please remember that Treliving did not have the final say in PHX either. He knows the ins and outs of the operations though, so that is beneficial. Seems like he fits what Burke wants to do with this team.

Why are people suggesting that Phoenix's draft record isn't good under Treliving's tenure? First round picks in the draft since he got there:

2008: Boedker - Good pick up compared to the players selected around him.
2009: Ekman-Larsson - Great pick up. Center piece to the team.
2010: Gormley - This kid looks like a stud.
2010: Visentin - Tough to tell with goalies.
2011: Murphy - Graduated to the NHL this season. Looks like a great pick up for where he was picked.
2012: Samuelsson - Picked at 27 in a weak draft. He led the Oil Kings in scoring this season. THN has him as a top 50 prospect.
2013: Domi - Tough to criticize this pick.

They have some later round picks like Daughin, Stone, and Reinder that look good.

I think some people are doing a quick scan of Phoenix's picks and not seeing NHL games plays or names they recognize so are stating their drafting record is poor. But the reality is they have some really good prospects. They just (like Detroit) take awhile to graduate them.

I just spent some time looking at drafts for PHX, LA and BOS with Treliving, Futa and Benning as possible candidates. All have good drafting resumes and look capable of turning this thing around. Like most I would be happy with any of the three as they look close to getting their first job as GM in the NHL.

Burke has already said that "entertaining hockey" is the only way his teams will play. Even if Treliving wanted Coyotes hockey, he wouldn't get to implement it. Plus, remember that need created what was occurring in Phoneix, Calgary isn't in the same boat. Also, I doubt Burke would want to work with him if he believed they'd be butting heads on such an important issue.

People also need to stop thinking that the hiring of this GM means the same thing as the hiring of a GM in Calgary did pre Burke as President announcement last year. The guy coming in isn't the main architect for the Flames from a hockey perspective, Burke is that guy. The new GM is another "expert" at the table who hopefully has positive ideas, resources and abilities that will positively contribute and influence the direction of this club, but Burke is still the boss, and by default the most influential contributor.

I think many of the anti Burke crowd are still trying to convince themselves that if we hire the right GM, Burke is going to fade into the background and the Flames are just going to pay him royalty cheques for ####s and giggles. Simply not the case. He might fade away from the public eye (a little), but he's going to be right in there managing this team. Burke is not a "figure head" President, he's not a famous ex-player president that has been brought in for appearances, make no mistake about it, he's the guy King and the Ownership group wanted steering this ship when they went out and got him and made him the big boss last year.

The best the anti-Burke camp can hope for with this GM hiring is that the guy coming in is also a persuasive strong personality that can get Burke to listen and collaborate with him, who's skill set excels in the areas where they feel Burke is weak.

I'm fairly certain that this is what Burke hopes for in his hire as well. I expect that in this whole ongoing discussion about the incoming GM that the truth is somewhere in the middle. He will be more than just a grunt doing Burke's dirty-work, but also will not have complete autonomy to build this team. Based on everything we are hearing, it sounds like Burke is intent on building a strong, smart, and skilled front office; a collection of good hockey minds to make sound hockey decisions.

Down for Treliving. Phoenix is a solid organization that manages to push for playoffs in the west while under a ridiculous budget

I think he provided a LOT of info there. I find it funny how whenever someone provides a really useful tidbit of info here, everyone starts clamouring for more. I'm pretty sure if he provided more, that would draw way too much attention and could get him in trouble (since I'm sure not a large number of people know what he does at this point in time).
