McPhee has probably been talking to others since the season ended.

I'm not too worried about McPhee. Hes been a dead man walking for a long time now, no one would have prohibited him from talking to another team for another job.
The draft complicates things somewhat, but I vaguely recall a precedent where someone was hired to another team prior to the draft but had to either abide by a confidentiality agreement or abstain from the draft proceedings but it was still permitted.
If McPhee was the guy I think we'd know it by now.

McPhee was held hostage by having a player be bigger than the team

He also built the team that was bad enough to finish last and draft AO.
McPhee hung on for a long time because he's a nice guy not because he's a great hockey guy, he has a robotic approach to drafting (drafts two goalies 11 spots apart in the 1st and 2nd round because that's what his list had as the best player...he admitted this.) and then does panic trades because the owner is pissed off.
In the end it probably won't matter who the GM is, bring in McPhee or even anyone on CP for that matter as long as they let Burke pull your puppet strings and tell you what to do.

Oates should just stick to his hockey pool, don't think coaching is really his thang..

They won the lottery. Only finished 3rd last. Chicago missing out on Malkin and getting stuck with Barker. No way they can recover from that :P

We honestly could do a whole lot worse than hiring McPhee. Seven division titles and 10 playoff appearances in 15 years. They bottomed out for a while, but have done relatively well, albeit in a terrible division for most of those years.
I'd love for a fresh hire as well, but if Burke prefers a manager with experience, then McPhee should be near the top of the list.

Yes, we could do worse, we just fired worse, but we could also do a lot better than to hand the keys who basically just drafted high and not much else.

Southeast Division. Very important to remember.
Washington - Half Decent
Winnipeg/Atalnta - Hot garbage
Carolina - Hot garbage to good and back again
Tampa Bay - Hot garbage to good and back again
Florida - The hottest garbage available
Yeah...a beer league team would stand a chance of winning that division and thats all you needed to make the playoffs.
Sometimes the only playoff team in the entire division was the division winner and that was only because they had to be.
Not a sterling resume.

I'm surprised Doug Risebrough didn't make the list. Gilmour for Leaman has to be the worst trade ever.

I also would love a fresh hire but at the end of the day we need a GM that can get Burkes mandate done. I presume Burke mandate is going to be a bigger, faster team. It really does not matter if it's a fresh new face or a veteran as long as they are on the same page as Burke.

Yeah, when we hired Craig Button he wasn't allowed to take part in the draft that year.

Okay, him only having success merely from drafting high is definitely a misconception. Ovechkin, Backstrom, and I suppose Alzner were obvious picks I'll give you that, but after that most of his better picks were made later in the draft.
Johnny Oduya 221st overall
Steve Eminger 12th overall
Alexander Semin 13th overall
Boyd Gordon 17th overall
Jeff Schultz 27th overall
Mike Green 29th overall
Semyon Varlamov 23rd overall
Mathieu Perreault 177th overall
Carlson 28th overall
Marcus Johansson 24th overall
Dmitri Orlov 55th overall
Cody Eakin 85th oveall
Evgeny Kuznetsov 26th overall
I am sorry, but outside the top ten in most drafts you need to give credit to the GM, no matter where the selection is made. McPhee made a ton of great picks late in the first round, when picks aren't necessarily obvious. I think that's a really good record quite honestly. His trade history is pretty mediocre, but his only awful moves were the Forsberg and Eakin trades, he just didn't make many great moves over his long tenure to counter them.

But it's way to early to say he's the guy.

But Molberg is telling us that they have their man, based, presumably, on inside info...

He declined an interview/talking to from us. He's the only one on record so far to be offered one.

And how many of those draft picks are impact players on his team, or were traded for effective replacements to make his team better?
