Just to clarify the law
http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/ot...309/story.html
Quote:
Another young woman, who said she was at the party, said about 20 of Ben Harper’s friends and sports teammates attended, many wearing swimsuits.
“It was just a hanging out, a get-together,” said Devon von Eicken-Bursey, whose boyfriend plays volleyball with Ben.
“There was some drinking and mixing and stuff,” but no one who appeared to be seriously intoxicated, von Eicken-Bursey said. “We were all very controlled.”
She said Ben’s RCMP protective detail was around but she didn’t see either of his parents.
When von Eicken-Bursey and her boyfriend left the party around 1 a.m., she said, police cruisers had just pulled up and asked them if they had seen anyone vomiting.

The legal drinking age in Ontario is 19. However, a parent may supply their own underage child with alcohol in their own home.
It’s not illegal for parents to allow other minors to drink in their home, as long as the parents aren’t supplying the alcohol.

I stand corrected, it was a birthday party for Ben Harper. So there WAS underage drinking at 24 Sussex!!! *clutches pearls*
The Herald article said it "hasn't been confirmed this girl actually attended the party". So you know, maybe a really intoxicated 18 year old girl just made her way to 24 Sussex by herself and started puking on the driveway. The same night a bunch of other 18 year olds were partying there. Yes.

I don't see the big deal here and I'm no fan of Harper. Kids will be kids even if they happen to be a PM's kid.

I don't think it's a big deal either but, like others have stated, looks pretty funny coming from the guy who crapped on Trudeau for smoking weed.

And his soulless eyes.
That drinking law is kind of funny to me. It says that it is OK for a parent to let underage teens drink in their home as long as they are not supplying the alcohol, but do the parents at least need to be there to supervise?
Also, does the person in the home need to be a parent, or could any adult allow it in their home?

Wonder if our prime minister was in the room, wearing a Flames hockey jersey with a hat on backwards while yelling "You kids are light weights, watch what a fully armed and operational prime minister can do"
Then shot gunning a sick pack of beer and belching loudly while flashing gang signs.

I just want to hear Stephen Harper refer to himself as a "Fully armed and operational Prime Minister".
A+ for that one.

No, more likely he was in his study sitting in a rocking chair, wearing a sweater vest petting his cat confused as to why Canadians don't understand his new election act.

Stephen Harper strikes me as someone who likes to fire it up rather than drink. Maybe it's not that he's boring as to why he always sounds so dry when he talks, maybe it's cause he's baked.

Meh, no big deal... I did worse when I was 18. Although there is a bit on annoyance because you just know that if Justin Trudeau were in a same situation the Tories would have already sent out a press release and e-mail trying to pass it off as a major transgression (and then ask you for money).

The parent can still be held civilly responsible for any damages that occur regardless if they "supplied" the alcohol or not.
The case I was thinking about was in Hamilton where a teen got alcohol poisoning and the parents of the teen sued the other parents for $1.4 million.

You should have Googled the Liquor License Act of Ontario.
Quote:
Supply by parent
(13) This section does not apply,
(a) to the supplying of liquor to a person under nineteen years of age in a residence as defined in section 31 or in a private place as defined in the regulations by a parent of the person or a person having lawful custody of the person; or
(b) to the consumption of liquor by a person who is supplied liquor in a manner described in clause (a), if the liquor is consumed at the place where it is supplied. R.S.O. 1990, c. L.19, s. 30 (13).
|
AB law is the same to my understanding. Basically, if the parent OKs it in a private setting. its OK. Period.
Scenario, a bar is closed for a staff Xmas party. An invited guest brings their child and approves them getting alcoholic drinks, then it is legal.
And as for "alcohol poisoning", for some it can be a very, very small amount that causes an issue. As someone stated earlier, we don't know the BAC. My older sister reacted very badly to tequila the first time. Never touched it since.

What I was getting at in my last post that you quoted was this (from the Herald):
Quote:
It’s not illegal for parents to allow other minors to drink in their home, as long as the parents aren’t supplying the alcohol
|
So, if I am a parent, I can invite someone else's kid over to drink even if that kid's own parent isn't around? What if my own kid wasn't even there?
