Maybe this is why the revolt was so quick to form.

We've heard rumblings about how unpleasant she is to deal with.

She certainly wouldn't listen to opposition parties when they submitted bills.

For all we know every senior MLA told her to knock this sh%t off and she basically told them that she's the premier and entitled to her entitlements.

Surely as taxpayers we have some recourse in preventing her from no-showing for the next two years don't we? Or have all MPs had the option of simply staying home and collecting a paycheque this whole time?

I believe they get docked a certain amount of money for each missed day in the legislature.

Under the Legislative Assembly Act, MLAs are allowed to be absent from the House or their committee responsibilities for up to 10 sitting days before they are docked pay.

Nah, I really don't care. Its just that I don't actually see much of a difference of whether the plane is headed from Calgary to Edmonton with just Redford or with Redford and her daughter? Cost-wise seems like it would be almost impossible to have a difference?

I'm not saying that she should fly the plane for vacations though. I think that's indefensible. When I read the article it said she was meeting the mayor or something like that...if that's the case it sounds like work? I know that if I had to drive to Jasper for work there is a good chance I would take a friend or family with me and make it into a weekend.

I can take my wife on business trips with me. She can stay in my hotel room, but if we fly commercial, she pays for a ticket, or if we get seats on the corporate jet, the company bills me for her seat.

I would assume that would be the case almost everywhere.

Luckily the places I go to for work are nowhere anyone would want to go for vacation so I don't have to worry about it.

You can't really open that door is the problem. If Redford and her daughter always have 2 seats booked and the plane fills up, that is one person incurring government expenses to arrange alternate travel.

If it happens often enough the expectation is set that you always leave two seats for Redford and her daughter, and people are constantly flying commercial unnecessarily.

Redford deserves to be dragged though her own mud puddle as usual but I really hate that the media saw fit to publish the names and photos of her daughter and nanny. That's crossing the line IMO.

Redford asks to collect pay while absent from legislature

EDMONTON — Former premier Alison Redford has notified the Alberta legislature Speaker’s office that she has a legitimate excuse for not attending the legislative assembly.

Redford’s staff advised the Speaker she is declaring her absence under rules that exempt MLAs from being docked pay if they can’t attend due to illness or injury, bereavement, or public or official business outside the legislature, said a spokeswoman for the Speakers’ office.

The spokeswoman said she wasn’t aware of the specific reason for the absence.

This is why I'm a fan of the idea of recalls of elected officials.

Alison Redford is pretty much not just a self entitled witch, but she's pretty much in my mind a thief.

But knowing how government works and this PC party, she'll not only get paid, but she'll get some kind of field bonus.

She knows that this is going to seriously harm her party and she's sitting back with a patch over one eye muttering "If I'm going down, I'm taking you all with me."

She won't be satisfied until she see the party that fired her reduced to a pile of ash.

I've been having trouble over the next few days deciding who's got the worst track record in Canadian Politics right now, Redford in Alberta, or Wynne in Ontario, they're both incompetent and both crooks, but Redford gets the edge on sheer darkside power.

I am not even going to try to defend this push by Redford, but recall is just lazy policy. Lets pretend we had recall. First of all, almost any MLA could be recalled because they're elected with such a small percentage of the votes in a FPTP system. Granted someone would have to make the effort, but sour grapes would be a good enough reason for a lot of people.

Second, lets look at this scenario. Say you need 15% of eligible voters in a riding to get the MLA recalled. So you go door-to-door in Calgary Elbow and get the requisite number of autographs and lets say that takes 6-8 months. The there is some kind of a process to go through things and review that these people all live in the riding and things like that. So the actual recall would take place, say next January. Then the by-election would be say 4-5 months from then, so you basically get someone out and replaced what, 6 months ahead of the normal election? Its great political theatre, but I'm not sure of the efficacy.
