While underage drinking is something most of us have done and isn't a huge deal, it certainly is if it was happening at the Prime Minister's house especially to the point that someone had to be hospitalized. If the drinking was happening there, I expect the proper charges will be laid.

Had this act occurred, it would have been legal at the Harper household. Maybe a bit frowned upon. If Rob Ford can get away with what he can, why can't Harper?

Sorry to let you down here, but I read about this before the thread was started and I didn't even think it warranted a thread. I realise that probably disappoints people who expect me to be some raging anti-Harper machine.

I sort of assumed the son and this girl had been out somewhere drinking/partying, and went back to the house together. Maybe it's the son's girlfriend and she just got too drunk. I really doubt the PM is letting his son have underage drinking parties at Sussex Drive.

I've always wondered what constitues "severe intoxication". Like what level of BAC is that? But I mean "severe intoxication" sounds like most weekends for many of us.

I would assume that Ontario is like the 29 states and this girl probably had parental consent given that there would be tons of people around the house (RCMP included)

Does anyone know if this is true?
Does Ontario have a two tiered drinking law?
I am pretty sure Alberta does not.

I won't be impressed until someone dies from a cocaine overdose.
Come back when you're ready to bring the heat, 24 Sussex.

If I was going spend time with Stephen Harper, I'd want to be at a Jim Lahey/Boris Yeltsin level of drunk too.

What, you dont tie one on with Steve? I do. I go Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:00. You just have to bring a sixer for the bodyguard.

I don't know about Ontario.
Of course with Alberta that would require everyone's parents to be at a party before it became legal.

I don't think Ontario does either. There was a case in the news not that long ago where a mother let some teens drink at the house and she was charged for it.

I'm not sure why this is news, but my best guess is Harper's son and the girl probably got drunk in Hull and then returned to his place.

Ok, so a quick Google search tells me that it is illegal for an adult to "supply" alcohol to minors, but the adult isn't necessarily criminally accountable if the teens drink in their home without the adult knowing about it. It is however illegal for a minor to consume alcohol anywhere (even in a private residence).
The parent can still be held civilly responsible for any damages that occur regardless if they "supplied" the alcohol or not.
The case I was thinking about was in Hamilton where a teen got alcohol poisoning and the parents of the teen sued the other parents for $1.4 million.
