Been so long that I had to search for the Malaysian search thread.
Amazingly how quickly the interest dropped off. Were the pings they heard possibly a few days too late as the batteries quit right after? Will this thing never be found?
Rather unfortunate that we'll likely never have answers.

I believe it will be found, AF447 took a few years to find. They will need to bring in deeper diving equipment and more support, and they will have to do it during the summer. I predict fall of 2015

They found debris from af447 after 4 or 5 days though so they knew pretty much where to look and it still took a couple years.
They haven't found a trace of 370 45+ days in and at this point are just making their best guess at where it might be in a search area way bigger then for the air France flight.

If they couldn't find MH370, what did those detected pings mean? Are they false alarms or something?

The Aussies may have found a piece of debris off the coast.

AF447 also had a search area about the size of a city block. This search area is much, much larger.

I like to compare this to the Titanic. We had a general idea of where it went down and it still took 70 years to find the wreckage. It ended up being 13 miles away from where we thought it would be.
If they find it in our lifetime, I'd be genuinely surprised.

I think you are confused, AF447 had multiple search areas. In general the search area measured 40NM in diameter. Multiple phases of the search were conducted, some of them as large as 1900 square kilometre.

Seriously? Are they going to be using 1920s,30s,40s,50s technology over the next few decades looking for this plane? Sure there's a chance it will never be found but the reason the Titanic spent 70 years undiscovered was because for the bulk of that time there was no adequate technology to search properly. A really odd analogy.

In my mind, the technology advances are negated by the fact that they really have no confirmed area where the plane went down (or if it went down). They're going off a "best guess" which makes the tech advantage a moot point.
Fact is, they'll be incredibly lucky to find it.

Malaysian government has done so much distortion of the truth, retraction of statements, general withholding of information at key moments (such as the radar data, cargo manifests, raw air traffic control voice data and even passenger manifest). After the first time withholding data, what is to say none of the data they've released hasn't been doctored or misrepresented? How do we know the pings we are hearing off the Australian coast are actually from the right black box? Apparently searchers are not sure it's where they are searching amid rumors the plane actually landed?

For the better part of the 1900s they were unable to even search at those depths at all. This present search won't be abandoned and the technology will improve with each year that goes by. It will take time no doubt, but it's still a world of difference from a time period where the search was virtually not possible.

Even with today's technology, if you don't really know where to look, you might as well be looking for Amelia Earhart.

This has nothing to do with depths. They don't even know if it crashed in the water, or which body of water. Like I said, everything is best guess at this point.
I have no doubt they'll find it one day, but it may very well be after my time on this world has come and gone.

No, it's technology. In one case, you had the better part of a century where proper searching wasn't even possible. Now, while the area is in dispute, the technology is light years ahead. I just think that's a much bigger difference than you seem to.
