There are a lot of question marks for next year. Can Giordano sustain his play from this year? Will Monahan have a sophomore slump? Will they be able to replace Cammalleri's production? Will Ramo regress?
The Flames could easily be worse next year.

Then measure if that chance of getting a good pick this year (1st in this thought process) is better than getting a decent pick next year.

Because if the traded Flames pick ended up winning the lottery a lot of Flames fans would be jumping off bridges.

Our 2015 1st round pick should be more untouchable then our 2014 1st, imo.

This couldn't be any more short sighted. There is no way you or anyone knows this, and just because we weren't last this season doesn't mean we're going to improve in point totals with each season. It's completely conceivable / possible we could see a regression in points with more rookies entering the lineup.
With the fact there could be three lottery spots next season this is the absolute worst strategy we could take. Glad you're not our GM.

Can you imagine the optics nightmare the Flames would face if the traded pick won the lottery next year and was used to draft McDavid?

It's hard to imagine Burke letting this team fester in the bottom 5 of the league.
I'm fine watching another season like this last one, but I don't think Burke is. And I don't think ownership are either.
It will take a dedicated effort to outstink the FLA, BUF, EDM and NYIs in next year's race to bottom.
IMO 2 picks in the first 4 this year is worth the gamble.

Optics nightmare?
It's just a straight up nightmare.

No it's not. This organization needs some patience and fans need to be prepared for being bad again next year.

Its really not though, imo. The overall talent in next years draft is much better, even if we finish out of the top 5.

I agree with you but Burke said that before the Flames had their strong run to end the year. Personally I think the flames are poised for a step back if they don't make many changes this summer. I do wonder however if Burke is going to try and speed things up because the team is further ahead then when he initially made those comments.
He said at the deadline he wants to be a buyer next year and said he doesn't want to talk about a non playoff year again next year. I expect him to improve the talent on the team but do not think he uses the 1st as trade bait.
My personal opinion at this stage the Flames are still in the mix for a top 3 selection next year

It's not short sighted at all. It's a bird in hand. And that bird would instantly become one of the top players on the team.
Its conceivable / possible that the team could go in either direction next year, sure.
But the teams below the Flames this year tried to fail. If they and others do that next year (history shows that certain teams do) how can the Flames possibly finish lower?
So they will finish better next year. If you are playing the odds, the odds of having 2 and 4 this year are safer than the 5-10 selection next year magically turning into Connor McDavid or Eichel.

You don't gamble with next years 1st round pick, especially for a team that picked 6th overall last season and 4th overall this year.

This has the Kessel Seguin disaster written all over it. Sure, it's a bit more debatable now if it was worth it, but for years the Leafs were a laughing stock because of how the gambled 1st rounders ended up to be a second overall and another high pick the year after. I don't think Burke makes that mistake twice.

For us it would be a disaster, because the last thing this franchise needs is to build around a "star winger" again. Now obviously the same trade wouldn't happen, but there's no reason to rush this. I would like to think that the management group is more pragmatic than the fanbase when it came to a young team punching above it's weight class about to lose their leading scorer.

You trade next year's pick and you're trading your only ever shot at a generational talent like McDavid. Whether he's the next Crosby or Gretzky or the next Spezza or Lindros, it doesn't matter. The only chance we'll have in my lifetime to get a player with that pedigree is by having a pick in the 1st round of the 2015 entry draft. That pick is untouchable in my opinion.

Nice try, but no. You don't know that and cannot say that with any degree of certainty. Talking about odds when you're tossing out certainties on things you can't possibly know shows just how short sighted your take is. It would be a terrible idea to give up on next year's first with how deep the top few picks are and the fact there may be a lottery for three spots.

Spezza? He's a good center, but is not in the same tier as the other guys. (nor is Lindros, but injuries played a part in that)

It's a much deeper draft than McDavid or Eichel.
And even with a 5-10 selection I'd take the upside of:
a.)Wee chance at McDavid if lotto win
b.)Not win lotto and get a great prospect anyway in a deep draft
Instead of gambling with it by trading it away for proven players. No, you have to look at the risk-reward factor instead of just the odds. It's just too great to gamble this pick away. Any other year, then I'd consider it. But not with a generational ####ing talent on the line, after we finish bottom 10 the last two years.

Yes that's right, every team below the Flames (but not including the Flames, of course) tanked this year.
You can't say this team will be better next year because this team didn't start playing well until the season was already over for them.
I'm sure both the Islanders and Florida thought bigger things were in store for them this season too. We know the Oilers did.
How did that work out?

I don't think any teams tanked this year, but the Sabres are setting up for Mad Tank next season.
