4-2 Avs, MacKinnon with 4 points. Unbelievable.

Flames tanked harder than the Avs last year. Flames sold off all their assets. Avs just had the most incompetent coach ever.
Avs win again! MacKinnon is awesome! Wooooo!

Weakening your team on purpose is tanking/rebuilding/whatever. It needed to happen here, but I don't see how it is any different than the Avs. Players don't quit like that, you seriously underestimate Sacco

tanking is LOSING ON PURPOSE to improve draft position...the fact that the Flames traded all those guys and still outperformed the Avs tells you they weren't putting much of an effort in
Anyway I don't really care who tanks but to say the Flames tanked more than the Avs is statistically wrong

Nobody loses on purpose (well, Vancouver flat out gave up this year). The Avalanche were legitimately that bad last year. Roy has completely changed the franchise. Flames actively tried to worsen their team, Colorado didn't. That's all I'm saying. It didn't turn out that way, but that's because the young Flames surprised everyone.
The irrational hatred toward the Avalanche is baffling to me

"Some guys are more worried about their [Las] Vegas trip at the end of the season than playing the games, than playing every minute of the games," a fuming Giguere told the Denver Post after seeing the Avalanche's record fall to an NHL-worst 12-22-5.
"It’s embarrassing. I’m embarrassed to be here right now. … Quite frankly, I don’t care about your Vegas trip right now."
|
It's the coach's fault the players quit last year? I don't think Giguere has an irrational hatred for the Avalanche.

Flames didn't trade Iggy because they thought it would make them worse so they could draft higher. They traded him because he was a UFA.
The avs own goaltender accused his skaters of mailing it in last year lol
again, I don't care or hate the Avs for it, just annoying how the system rewards a team that mails it in down the stretch

Meh, the Avs kept a lame duck coach who'd clearly lost the locker room far past his expiry date, hell he appeared to be actively trying to ruin Duchene's career several times. An org that wasn't tanking would have fired him halfway through the year at the latest. It's OK, embrace your tank job, it worked out for the Avs. I'm just glad I don't cheer for an organisation that condones that crap.

I don't see how Colorado tanked either.
- The last 10 games played they were .500
- Only 2 teams had a better record than them out of the bottom 10 in the last 10 games of the season (Buffalo and Calgary).
- They won the lottery.
- They had a winning home record.
The only reason they were so bad was their road record, which could have a lot to do with coaching/preparation.

I forgot about the Giguere quote. I do think you can assign some of the responsibility for the players quitting on the coach in this situation, the players knew his system would not (and did not) work. Duchene said as much earlier this year. However, I wouldn't think of arguing against Giguere, a leader in that room.
I am still in favour of a system where the team that gets the most points after being eliminated from the playoff hunt gets the first pick. Then this conversation never happens.

Can see why Feaster wanted that 1st overall pick. Monahan + Poirier + Klimchuk for Mackinnon... would do.

When that happened, their attendance went from 18,007 every night to the 13k range almost immediately.

Ah, didn't know that. I just remember during the Sakic years they had the longest sellout streak going.

You would do that right now, sure.
But would you still do it in 3 years when all 3 of those guys turn out to be top 6 players for the Flames? Building a great team involves more than just a single player.

Could see this series shifting with the Wild at home. They can get Suter matched up against the MacKinnon/Stastny/Landeskog trio who is roasting the other Wild d-pairings.

Where did I say that?
I was simply disputing the claim that some Avs players didn't quit, not giving a reason for why they quit.
