It's been hard on the organizers of tomorrow's memorial because they're quite concerned media is going to show up for what was going to be a private event. It's been run in the newspaper, multiple websites, etc. Glad we have a CPS liaison. I'm not too concerned personally, but if any media ends up near the event they'll be asked to leave. Especially after the joint statement from all the victims' families saying they would like space. Mainly no one wants to spend their day of remembrance telling media to go away. We just want to grieve.

It's amazing the way media acts in these events. Unfortunately, for some of the actual media members that will assuredly show up, I would bet it's not even their own decision.
The media organizations know how big this is and I would imagine there's a lot of "you'll show up there because it's your job, and you do want to keep your job, right?" going on.
"Here's your assignment; Show up where these people are grieving. End of story".

A lot of people came by today, some close family I'm sure I could see they were visibly shaken. I paused for a few moments in front of the house to look at the flowers and cards, it is incredibly hearth wrenching. My heart goes out to the families, it means little but I am so very sorry for your loss.

Why would you go to the house where people were murdered in order to look at the memorial, especially after the family asked for privacy. I understand that it is part of human nature to be entranced by a news story, but seriously, why? It isn't showing support, it borders on gawking at a horrible incident more than anything else. Let the family and friends who knew the victims of this tragedy grieve for their loss in peace.
Edit: This is assuming based on your previous posts that you are not immediately connected to the victims.

He lives a few doors down from the house, he can't walk down his own street now? you likely weren't aware of that but don't jump to conclusions

Fair enough, I was under the impression that he went out of his way to go to the house, which would be pretty crass and yet at the same time not unexpected from some people (people like to gawk at car crashes after all).

As much as Zamler has pissed me off during this thread, you are completely over-reacting.

Fair enough, as I said, I was under the impression that he went out of his way to spend time at the house where it occurred, which in my opinion would be pretty equitable to gawking at a car accident. As I said, I was wrong in my assumption.

What is wrong with you? You know something, a lot of people have come here. Some walk, some drive, people come here from all over the city. People leave flowers and cards. You think that's gawking? Give your head a shake, jesus christ.
And I live 2 houses away, it affects me and so many others that live here. Going by the house to leave flowers and pay my respects is something I feel I need to do.
.....honestly I'm done with this thread and probably this site for awhile. Some of you have been complete insensitive #######s, yes I am angry and maybe I am unable to see things clearly. But believe it or not, that is a normal reaction when you are so close to where something like this happens. And I know I'm not alone in feeling this way, talking to others that live on my block it is a very difficult thing to deal with. Of course we are not affected nearly as much as the families that have lost the people they so dearly love. But that does not mean this just slides off our backs. It doesn't. This community is hurting.

I get what MeamMrMustard was saying, though. He was wrong about you, but what he was referring to wasn't people showing up to show support or leave flowers, he was referring to people who show up and just look, the same way people look at car crashes out of curiosity.

I do hope that the media keeps a respectful distance, but I also hope that there is something comforting in the fact that the nation is grieving with the families, which is why the media wants to be there.

Terrible loss for the families of all involved. Cannot fathom the range of emotions they're all trying to cope with right now.
For the love of all that is holy, please let these families mourn and grieve in privacy. The media has no business being so invasive at that point in time.

I feel like that's half-accurate. Empathy is, generally, a fantastic and necessary feeling, but the reason why the media wants to be there is because that is where they believe the story is. It is something that plays to, and on, someone's empathy. This is why there was a rush to put up victim profiles. It was, in an unfortunate truth, a competition to be the first to have the most details on the victims. You want people to grieve and be sad and empathetic, but you want them to do it with -your- news site. Your articles. The media does not exist to provide empathy, it is meant to be there to project your empathy. It's a business and businesses don't have feelings.
Everyone will always be glad of the love and support of a nation. Just don't mistake what the media actually is as opposed to what you want it to be.

Your reaction is perfectly normal, I understand how much it must hurt. Just being near it all must be at least mildly traumatizing, I feel for you man, just because it didn't happen to you being so close must be really hard.

To be fair and honest, it's not like you've conducted yourself in a way that explicitly looks out for the sensitivity of those even closer to the situation than you. People who actually know Matt, or Lawrence, or the other victims.
Whatever you're going through right now, the reaction you just had to Mustard's comment, just know that people have had those very same hard reactions to some of the stuff you've said in this thread. Take this opportunity to look in the mirror and think about how being insensitive to a certain viewpoint or how someone might be handling this just affected you, and how your own insensitivity to matters concerning this tragedy affected others.

Have any of the witnesses been interviewed yet by the media? I'm interested in knowing what was going on from the start of the party till this incident - especially from people who were near the killer most of the time that night.

I would imagine the police have spoken to them and perhaps provided guidance regarding their contact with the media, defence, etc.
Depending on the case, often a witness will avoid the media due to court.
