Wow, no mentioning of Radim Vrbata? I think that guy should really be in the mix.. Seen him play in Phoenix, and I think he would be a good fit with Backlund and Hudler.

Cam Ward is a pure salary dump at this stage. It has even been said they're willing to retain salary.
6.3M cap for a back-up goalie in the NHL is ridiculous (and that's what Ward is now).

I'd be down with that.
As far as UFAs go:
Stastny - anytime there's a top 2 centre, that is only 27 years old available for "free", you take a shot at him.
Bolland - adding a guy with a winning culture engrained into him would be a good thing for this team. His ability to play wing and centre is useful.
Downie - we're weak on the right side, and Downie adds that "edge" that we've lacked ever since Ville left town.
Jagr - he'd be lights out for Baertschi, Gaudreau, Colborne and any other of our developing wingers. He'd be great for the kids, plus I just love Jagr.

Ranger is intriguing.. I haven't really heard much about him since he came back. How did he look this year? His numbers are decent.
I know before he went out for 'personal reasons' he was on the rise down in Tampa.

Niskanen would be awesome. I LOVE a mobile D core, and.....
Giordano - Brodie
Russell - Niskanen
...would be an extremely mobile top 4 defense.

I'd rather have Butler than Ranger.

Throw money at Stastny and Niskanen. Can never have too many centres and mobile defensemen.

I think we are trying to avoid the long-term deals.
Also, there is no way Greene takes an approximate 33% pay cut.

I have a feeling that Burke would consider Downie as one of those "rat" players he doesn't want on his team.

True, but I'm on the fence with that one. He might be a good fit though, and I've said I wouldn't like him in Flames jersey.

He might not like 'rats' but he's had his fair share of them on his teams.

Although adding Downie would add some 'bite' to this team, he carries too much negative baggage with him that I don't want near our team.

I think Joey Mac will be back as a back-up next year.
Jagr makes sense for Calgary, but I don't see why Calgary would make sense for Jagr.
No thanks to Setoguchi.
I'd love a guy like Moulson but he's best friends with Tavares. I can see him going back to New York.
Another guy I wouldn't mind is Bolland, but his asking price will be high and I don't know if he's going to be worth it.

c) He has been working with one-year deals only, this works perfectly for us.
d) He would get top line minutes and top minutes on the PP which is his incentive to come here, we aren't exactly super deep in RW depth and as a one-year stopgap he seems to be a great choice to help us be competitive next year.
I still think he's going to NJ again which is a shame, but I would love the hell out of him here.
EDIT: I don't have any solid evidence to support it, but I've read reports that he is a great guy to have in the room and works closely with young guys, seems like good news for us.
|
We can agree to disagree . I'd rather see our young guys develop than be competitive next year (I think both can happen). But I'm making the assumption that Jagr would mess up the chemistry, I guess it is possible he could integrate and add to it. I just think that no matter how could of a guy he is, in the longer run it'd be detrimental to our rebuild. Anyways like you're saying it's kind of moot because I don't think he would come either.

Ramo earned the starting job, no need to find another starter. All they need to do is bring in a capable backup.

He's a 31yo, 3rd pairing Dman who's played a total of 43 games over the last 2 seasons.
Yeah he'll probably get more than 2m on the open market, but I can't see him getting the 3.25m he made in 2013/14.

His last 4 seasons he's averaged .37 goals/game + .39 assists/game. Pro-rated over 82 games is 30 goals + 32 assists.
Has only missed 4 games over those 4 years due to injury. 30 years old.
What does your sober brain think he's worth?
