Year - Worst Team - Lottery Winner - Winner Original Standing - Odds - Pick Result
1995 - OTT - LAK - 7th - 04.7% - Moved from 7th to 3rd
1996 - OTT - OTT - 1st - 25.0% - Retained 1st Overall
1997 - BOS - BOS - 1st - 25.0% - Retained 1st Overall
1998 - TBL - SJS - 3rd - 14.2% - Moved from 3rd to 1st (TBL had rights to swap)
1999 - TBL - CHI - 8th - 03.6% - Moved from 8th to 4th
2000 - ATL - NYI - 5th - 08.1% - Moved from 5th to 1st
2001 - NYI - ATL - 3rd - 14.2% - Moved from 3rd to 1st
2002 - ATL - FLA - 3rd - 14.2% - Moved from 3rd to 1st
2003 - CAR - FLA - 4th - 10.7% - Moved from 4th to 1st
2004 - PIT - WAS - 3rd - 14.2% - Moved from 3rd to 1st
2005 - N/A - PIT - N/A - N/A - N/A
2006 - STL - STL - 1st - 25.0% - Retained 1st Overall
2007 - PHI - CHI - 5th - 08.1% - Moved from 5th to 1st
2008 - TBL - TBL - 1st - 25.0% - Retained 1st Overall
2009 - NYI - NYI - 1st - 25.0% - Retained 1st Overall
2010 - EDM - EDM - 1st - 25.0% - Retained 1st Overall
2011 - EDM - NJD - 8th - 0.36% - Moved from 8th to 4th
2012 - CBJ - EDM - 2nd - 18.8% - Moved from 2nd to 1st
2013 - FLA - COL - 2nd - 18.8% - Moved from to 1st
2014 - BUF - TBD - TBD - TBD - TBD
So out of 18 drafts (not including the 2005 draft) the following occured:
1st place has won 6 times (33.3%)
2nd place has won 2 times (11.1%)
3rd place has won 4 times (22.2%)
4th place has won 1 time (5.6%)
5th place has won 2 times (11.1%)
6th place has never won
7th place has won 1 time (5.6%)
8th place has won 2 times (11.1%)
No team beyond 8th has won
|
So what you're saying is that 4th place is due for another win?

Wow, it's almost a coin flip.
Go Flames! This is the best chance they have ever had at getting the number 1 pick.

I wonder if the Nyquist/Tatar rumour is the left jab softening us up for the right hook of the draft lottery.

I would hate it if Edmonton won the lottery again but that is what happens with a lottery anyone can win. They could finish 17th next year and win the lottery then finish 27th the next and win it again. Unfortunately a lottery is the best system so we just need to hope this scenario never happens.
It just needs to be changed so that the worst team is not guaranteed a top 2 pick. The draft lottery should be for the top 5 picks with more even odds for the non-playoff teams. If the worst team had a 50% chance of drafting 6th there would be a huge risk in tanking.

For health and safety reasons you shouldn't listen to the draft lottery while driving.

...However, in the event the Devils win the Draft Lottery, an immediate re draw will be conducted to select a different recipient of the first overall selection in the First Round. The same process will be conducted as many times as necessary to ensure that the first overall selection is awarded to a team other than New Jersey....
|
I hope the "New Jersey ball" gets picked 17 times in a row.
Hey, given their luck in the shootout, anything's possible...

What would be worse the Islanders or the Oilers winning the lottery? I don't think I can stand the Oilers getting another first overall pick, so I am willing to even slide down a spot to avoid that.

Naw, I'd still rather have a higher chance at a better players than drop to not have the Oilers win.
They're just going to ruin whoever they pick anyway. Like MacT said about Yakupov today, you don't send down first overalls they play in the NHL!

Maybe it's just me but the worst situation imaginable would be if the Canucks won it.
