So ####ing sad and senseless. The effects of this will run deep for many and for decades.
I can't believe this happened here.

The most dangerous situation I got myself into was at a super laid back fire-pit get together. A group of my friends were chatting up some neighbour girls and a very quiet, polite drunk guy felt one of us was getting too close to his buddies girlfriend. In about 10 seconds it went from nothing to nearly witnessing somebody get brained with a log.
This is just brutal. "Senseless" was a good way to put it. People have died at BSD before, but this is a whole new level. I wonder how the UofC will respond (assuming this is BSD related).

5 dead?! that's crazy. Is this one of the largest murders in Calgary history? I remember the guy in Dalhousie who killed his family and a renter, but he was one of the 5 dead.

I assume that the people killed were sleeping/passed out? Otherwise how could you stab and kill 5 people without them stopping you? Regardless, just a terrible tragedy.

I think the worse thing I ever witnessed at a house party was in Brandon MB of all places. Some drunk guy was acting like an jerk all night. Then for no reason, he whipped it out in the middle of the living room and took a piss in the middle of the floor. The guy who lived there went and got a shotgun and had the guy on his hands and knees crying in his piss puddle for like 10 minutes before he put the gun down. That was pretty much a party killer after that. I thought for sure I was going to witness a murder that night.
Ah, the wonders of alcohol.

This is absolutely awful.
I'd imagine the poor souls who died must have been passed out at the time. It seems impossible to kill five people with a knife otherwise.
My money is on bad drug trip.
In any case, scary scary stuff. Thoughts are with those affected.

Horrible. I don't think I've ever heard of any murders of this scale (in terms of numbers of victims) taking place in Calgary.
Is it confirmed they were all U of C students?
Very bizarre, very tragic.

Very tragic. Some idiot made a short-term decision that will cost him the rest of his life, and has undoubtedly crushed several families and dozens and dozens of family members in the process.
Man, parties these days are way more unstable than when I used to go to house parties (98-05)... why are people so angry? Why the increase in violence?

Pretty simple really. Guy starts stabbing randoms so you start running. I know in movies heroes are born every minute but in reality not many people are challenging a guy with a knife that has intent to kill.

I grew up in Brandon, that story doesn't shock me at all. Isolated and cold as hell winters, with little more to do than drink & fight.

Personally, I doubt it was a bad drug trip, unless the drugs in question were bath salts or something like that.
Drugs may have been a contributing factor to the rage or whatever (likely alcohol, cocaine or crack in that case), but how often does it actually happen where someone murders someone because of a bad trip (assuming that" bad trip" means that they lost their sense of reality)? It seems like the fear of that type of thing isn't actually justified by the number of occurrences.

How long do they generally wait to release the names of the victims?

This explains so much about why one of the biggest arsebites I've ever had the misfortune to know, moved back there.
What a brutal story. Those families.

Probably until after they notify next of kin. Then if next of kin doesn't want the name released they won't publish it.

I hope the killer gets tortured.
This makes me sick to my stomach.
Can't even imagine what the families are going through

I guess the moral is don't party with people you don't know. Remember that murder in Auburn bay? I think they were just neighbors.
