i think this year is a different draft though, in that as stated above there seems to be a definite top 3. Who's left after that that could entice, dal colle, draisatl, ehler, ritchie? The team picking at 4 will have some good options there, but i'd be shocked to see any of the first three teams pick someone over the 3 fav's (reinhart, bennet, ekblad). But if they did, i'd be jumping up and down come draft day.

I unfortunately see it the same way. Hoping to land one of the top three seems like wishful thinking but you never know. I'd be ecstatic to land Bennett or Reinhart.

By the way, slight clarification on the original post....If New Jersey wins the lottery we do not automatically pick 4th.....the lottery is re-drawn from scratch.
So I'm not sure those exact odds are correct.
Close enough anyway.

The Devils only have a 1.5% chance of winning the lottery, so you're right, the overall odds for the Flames don't change much at all.

As a side note, if New Jersey misses the playoffs, it's my understanding that the current plan is for the Devils to remain in the draft lottery in April for purposes of keeping the math right in terms of the odds. So, for example, if the Devils were to win the April draft lottery, their No. 1 overall pick would be taken over by the club that ended up No. 2 overall in the lottery, with every team behind them also moving up a spot as the Devils claim the 30th overall selection.

appears to agree with Red Menace:

The New Jersey Devils are taking part in the draft lottery, but they will not keep the pick as they have lost their lottery pick (if they miss the playoffs) and have been given the 30th overall pick a part of the Ilya Kovalchuk cap circumvention penalty. If the Devils win the lottery, there will be a full redraw.

However, they don't state what their source is.

That's how I see it playing out. Buffalo takes Bennet over Reinhart because of dynamism and grit, Florida and Edmonton draft to fill needs, and Reinhart falls to Calgary.
