The scouting staff hit a home run that year as far as I'm concerned. But it was Feaster's show at the time, and likely ultimately gave the go ahead to take a risk on Johnny, as well as take Sven over the other rumoured prospect they originally had ranked higher. If Burke has as good a looking draft this year, you guys would be thanking him before Todd. I think Jay deserves similar treatment for making some savvy decisions based on our scouting that year.

Do you like to give your boss credit for the job you do too? GM's set organizational scouting philosophies so if you wanna credit Feaster for doing that or getting the analytics program in you can. But to suggest he was somehow active in picking Gaudreau? That just doesn't seem likely at all. GM's usually don't overrule their scouts on any pick outside the first round.

Let's give credit where credit is really due. To Tod Button and his scouting staff. He's done a pretty good job in the last few years.

Sure, I get what you are saying and don't totally disagree, but some credit has to go Feaster's way (and I don't really think he was good). As you point out, Tod Button and his staff have done a decent job the past few years..............they were in place before (generally) so what changed then?

Even if Feaster was simply smart enough to get out their way and let them do what they wanted to do, that's good GMing. Even if that's all it is, Feaster's predecessor (who I liked) then seemingly didn't have the good sense to do that.

Whether Feaster aided in the process, or simply made a solid evaluation of his scouting staff and gave them the proper leeway it doesn't matter. It's a good managing decision that improved the clubs drafting, and he deserves credit for doing it, but I don't disagree that Button and staff deserve more for the picks.

The drafting seemed to turn around when Sutter put more emphasis on hockey sense. Feaster added a few scouts I believe and should get credit for that. Tod Button should get credit for improving his drafting over the years, it seems like the last 4-5 years have been much more productive than the few before that. He seems like a smart guy and I'd imagine he's learned a lot from his past mistakes (read interviews where they do do a lot of looking back to pinpoint their errors.)

I think Feaster did meddle less than Sutter did in his early years. So some minor credit there as well.

Yeah that's the thing, I just don't agree with this tendency some people have to try and judge GM's first on drafting when it's the scouting staffs under them that are actually doing the drafting. The GM can take some minor credit for overseeing, setting the philosophy, mediating scouting discussions, making trades to move up/down, etc. But the bulk of the credit HAS to go to the scouting staff especially if we're talking about non-first rounders. Granlund? Wotherspoon? Gaudreau? Reinhart? Brodie? Arnold? Bouma? That's all on Tod Button and his scouts.

I'm really happy to see Johnny play on a line with speed and skill. Would have been a waste to put him on a line with Westgarth or Big Ern.
I understand having an enforcer on his line may keep him safer from the Canucks dirtbags, but it's the last game of the year, I'm sure Big Ern and Westgarth will be trolling the Centre line during warmup to let the Nucks know that they'll have no problem missing the first 2 games of the regular season next year, if they have to come over the boards to kill someone, and I'm sure Hartley has given them the green light.

I don't know about that one, 2 games will cost them about $20k, not considering additional potential fines. I don't think they will be too eager to do it, and it doesn't matter what Hartley says.

Having watched Johnny's last college game, I really don't think Vancouver playing dirty is going to be a concern. The guy just doesn't seem to end up in bad situations. Even at times when it looks like he's going to get smashed, he just manages to squirm out of the way.

The kid has serious awareness, and he's like a greased up jumping bean. I forget who said it (a college coach maybe?) but they specifically said that you had to make sure you didn't try to run Gaudreau hard, lest he make you look like a fool.

I have zero worries.
