Johnny Gaudreau vs These "prospect" websites
Hey everyone,
I wanted to ask the knowledge of everyone here who knows more than I do...
I have been looking around for months now and I see the so called "prospect" websites like hockeys future, eliete prospects and they give Johnny Gaudreau a "c" grade at best.
Although you can accuse me of being an oilers troll, I am definately not. I was at Iggy's first game vs Chicago back in the day, and I just wanted to ask why Johnny Hockey has such a low rating by these sites.
Is that based clearly on size?
If you looked at the NCAA football or basketball leauge winners (hiesman and I dont know what baseketball gives out) there is no way any of these guys would be considered anything but a lock for a great pro career.
I can prove my fan status with my old school flaming captain C fleury jersey lol.
Anyhow, is it purely size? A guy who averages 2 points a game in his last year, wins the MVP should do better than that, shouldnt he?

Because he's small.

Tons of Heisman winners aren't considered great pro prospects - Tim Tebow, Troy Smith, Jason White.
But yes its the size. He's small. There are going to be doubters until he succeeds.

Size is a factor and also, sadly our organization has a bad reputation for developing prospects.

Make's sense. I guess that in today's NHL the guys are larger.
That would be a shame to be holding him back.
I wonder how much weight he could gain as in lean muscle mass in a year. Not sure of his weight (have not looked but sure that's available) but put on a program, he could likely gain a good 15-20 lbs before say, 2016.
Definitely would help.

That's basically it. Johnny had the highest skill by a wide margin in his draft year but his size dropped him to 104 overall which, at the time, was considered a gamble by the Flames. He just has to prove one more level of hockey that he belongs and I think next year will be a lot easier for him to go into with tonight's game and a run in the AHL.

I am going to try as hard as I possibly can to find somewhere on the net to see that game. The ONE GAME i absolutely do not want to miss.
I hope he has the heart of Theo. That was something that NO scouting could ever account for.

I think those rankings are purely based on size, and a little bit of draft position bias. Fourth rounders are typically safer for "experts" to underrate.
Also, the Heisman is not the same as the Hobey Baker. While some Hobey Baker winners go on to have great NHL careers, there are many who do not. The college system for football and basketball is the main developmental avenue in those sports for pre-professional prospects so obviously their best players are closer to the professional scene.

Winning the Hobey Baker really isn't an indication of anything -- look up previous winners. Very few have gone on to have any impact in the NHL, let alone be stars.

Hockey's Future gives him an 8.0 for talent, which means 1st line forward with all-star potential. The C is for risk of not meeting potential, which is fair as well. The comparables they list for an 8.0 prospect are Marleau, Richards, Spezza...if he turns out anything close to that, I'll be doing some heavy fist pumps.

I'm not saying that we're gonna botch Gaudreau's development. I'm just saying that to an outside observer all the Pardys, Pelechs and Boyds look understandably bad.

Yes but please put Gaudreau's win into context. Compare his age and the fact he was a junior with other winners.

I hope for his sake that he can succeed. He seems like a really good guy, it would be nice to see him prove all the doubters wrong.

you made it sound like a prospect is ranked by who drafts them

pardy and Boyd actually probably both covered the bet from where they were drafted

Look at this year's draft rankings. There are a lot of skilled sub-six foot guys rated below the top ten.
