That I can definitely see being a pretty legitimate reason from him to come here. It's just the whole "let's be line-mates in the NHL" thing that I'm hoping he's not basing his decision on. Just like teams shouln't sign/draft based on junior/college chemistry, players shouldn't sign NHL deals based on it either.

Hayes is more NHL-ready than Poirier is.
Poirier has more potential, but Hayes is closer to the NHL.

The ELC consideration does play a role for sure, just not for the Flames. I don't expect the Flames to be a cap team within the next 3 years. After the ELC is over RFA contracts play less and less in terms of saving cap space(judging by the contracts Edmonton is handing out, and examples such as Ryan O'Reilly).

Fair enough. But even if the cap is not an issue for the Flames the entire time, with a new player you are still getting 7 years before they gain FA status.

Nitpick, but its 6 years, he is already 21 and turns UFA at 27.

You just never know how long a development curve on a player could be. If Poirier was in better shape at the start of the season, he probably would have had a 9 game try out at the beginning of the year.
Poirier might be NHL ready this season. Might not.
Still, it would be a good problem to have. Competition for a job is always better than being the only kid on the block.

Man I am so pumped for tomorrow.
2-1 OT loss with Johnny's 1st NHL goal to tie it up late in the 3rd.

If you want to guarantee signing Kevin Hayes you don't trade anything to Chicago for him. You trade with Florida for Jimmy.

Could you even imagine a prospect spurning the Hawks for the Flames?
Insane if it happens.

Not really. A young prospect knows he's gonna be at the bottom of the list on a deep Chicago team.
If I was a borderline prospect hoping to make the jump to the NHL I'd probably go with the thinnest NHL team.

I think there is something to be said for staying with the team who originally drafted you. They have an investment, not only by drafting you but an emotional investment as well. Sometimes in life it's good to have higher ups watching your back. Look what's happened to Tom, he's become a piece of meat, getting traded and going up and down. He's being shown as much loyalty as he's given.

I would normally agree, but I think in this case I side with the player. Chicago is deep on wing already, plus there are prospects in the pipeline ahead of him. It might take a few years before he gets a fair look.
He would look great in the Flames prospect pool, but I have to think Florida must be on his mind. Playing with his bro on a rebuilding team seems like a solid option for him.
