you are obviously not as big a Jamie Macoun fan as I am, but still I think maybe you should add 34 to that list?

Darryl Sutter did this for years. I don't remember dramatics and whining about it then.

Because there was none, just like there's no dramatics now. There were a lot of people saying the same things as now though, "why does it matter?"

On the fence really. Play for team Canada at the WJRs? Here's your #9 kiddo! I have absolutely no problem with encouraging players to wear more traditional numbers. But I think it's the forcing them to accept a number I don't like.
Part of the higher numbers are kids wearing their rookie assigned numbers. 47, 60, 51, 58, 53, 48 and 56 are all numbers given to the kids from camp.
So you go to the kids as they join the team, and encourage them towards a lower number (this is a 5 second conversation)
Sven: would you like #27?
Markus: #11 is taken, would you like #9?
Bill: That dude who picked you up swapped #24 for #22 in his career. Deal?
Jesus: Cammalleri walked, here's the #13 you look majestic in
Paul: For some reason, I see you in a #10. Here ya go
Ben: Um... #58 is just fine for now, we'll talk later
Bryce: You wore #12 eh? BIT of an issue, but here's #21
Tyler: Reclaim your #26
Chris: #44 seems to have become a traditional D-man number, enjoy it
But if Bennett wants to wear his #93, a number he's worn forever... I have no issue with that.

Much ado about nothing? We just signed the best player in college hockey and he will be wearing #53 on Sunday. I think if you read between the lines, Burke wants our regulars (including Gaudreau, if and when that happens), to have a more "traditional" number.
Do you really think he'll make Butler change his 44? And for that matter, Ortio's 37?
If anything, it's a veiled jab at the team 300 km to the north (or at least movement in the opposite direction).

No, I think you missed the point of that argument - we aren't saying that we want high numbers, we are saying that Burke shouldn't care. There is a difference.

Hockey is a game, and to play it well, management has to sometimes participate in the process, not just mandate.
|
A game these guys are payed millions and millions of dollars to play. The guy signing the cheques, or his appointed manager should be able to mandate you wear any number he wants you to.

And if that is the attitude, prepare for a fight with the PA. This really isn't an issue, so Burke should just back off.

Seems like a silly thing to put much thought into. Retired numbers aside let the players where whatever they want/is available. Focus on the game.

My ideal response from a president if a reporter asked him about this would be "hmm, I hadn't thought about it."

This reminds me of the jersey tuck rule. Really pointless rule to add but didn't change the game at all. It came with a lot of ridiculous overreaction. Some of you are hilarious with how mad you are at this. At the end of the day, who cares? It's not changing the game so relax. It's a number on someone's back. Some of you are way too passionate about this, but keep it up, it's hilarious.

I'd like to hear why he came to this decision directly from the man. I have disagreed with a few of the things he has done, but when he's come out and explained his decision in an interview I always leave feeling better. Guy's got a silver tongue.

Just hopping on to say this is silly. Crosby wouldn't be able to ware 87 then, which he actually has a reason for; as do many others.

At a time when so many different players are playing between the Flames and the Heat, I don't see how this is even feasible.
Between injuries and call ups you're likely to have more players in a season than numbers available in that range.
Just short of 40 players suited up this season alone.
So we're going to have players sharing numbers now?
Just an example of Burke speaking before actually thinking.

Dear Brian,
There are many things more important right now than worrying about how your roster is numbered.
Love,
A fan.

Pretty sure it states that they don't get a real number until they've made the team. So no random call ups don't fall under this "rule"
Maybe you should think before posting.
