If he wants to drink and do blow go ahead, but don't endanger other peoples lives by being behind the wheel.

This I never understood. It makes little sense that millionaires drive drunk. What does the league do with players who have a cocaine problem?

Why should it make less sense for a millionaire to drive drunk vs. a regular slob driving drunk? Rich people like driving as much as average people do, and alcohol/drugs tends to make them just as stupid as regular people too.

Because for regular people, the cost of a cab is prohibitive. For a wealthy person, it is not.
Personally, I hate driving. If I was rich enough, I would cab it everywhere, or hire a driver.

Incidentally, I love how Malone's arrest report lists his occupation as "forward".
The cocaine possession charge is listed as a class 3 felony. According to this, that means he faces a maximum fine of $5000 and up to 5 years in jail. I would expect he'd be able to plead down to a lesser charge, pay a fine, do some time in the NHL substance abuse program and resume his career. Probably somewhere other than Tampa.

John Shannon @JSportsnet
Charges against Ryan Malone for DUI/Cocaine possession automatically put him in NHL/NHLPA Substance Abuse Program for Mandatory evaluation.
Would be some backlash if you try to buyout a player in rehab I would think.

I think it's crazy that the cocaine possesion carries a stiffer penalty than the DUI. A misdemeanor?
Drunk driving kills people. Cocaine by itself people (perhaps stupidly) use to party.

I don't buy that at all. If you can afford to go get wasted, you can afford a cab.
That said, this does appear to be a case of stupid person being stupid...
Damian Cristodero @LightningTimes 18m According to county records Malone since 6/22 has 7 citations for traffic infractions. April 30 court date for driving w/suspended license.

Affording it is one thing, but affording it and feeling it economically is another.
Getting wasted is cheaper than a cab in a lot of places. You can get a $20-$30 bottle of hooch to get drunk, but a cab ride in a large city from downtown to the suburbs can easily cost $60 or more one-way in a lot of North American cities.
I'm not saying that the cost is an excuse for an average person, but the decision to cab it, should be a lot easer for a wealthy person who won't feel it in their pocket book.

While I can't excuse driving drunk, the guy obviously has issues. Big Earn used to deal with these problems too, let's not forget, and he managed to completely turn things around for himself.
Best of luck to Malone in the SA program. Drug addiction is a hell of a demon.

Maybe. he signed his contract at the height of his career with 4.5 mill AAV. he's only really taking home 2.5 this year and next due to front-load, but it's still over-paying his 5g 10a = 15 pts in 57 games. He had more goals last year with only 24gp.

Huh?
1 guy out of 800 players gets caught with Cocaine, and that makes the NHL drug program a joke?
Explain the logic in this statement please?
