I wish prospects would sign with the teams that drafted them too - but they don't always - and this is part of the game now. The Flames have been burned by this in the past, so it is only fair that if there is an opportunity to get a prospect for a lower value then you do it.
The Flames may have a leg up because of relationships between Hayes and his college buds. If so - take advantage of it.
The organization made a strong move to acquire Corban Knight for below value. More of those type of moves are welcome for an organization still relatively think overall on assets

I'm just not a fan of the entire NCAA rights thing at all. I'm also not so keen on the perception that a prospect not signing with his draft team and coming to sign with his college linemates carries. I shouldn't care because really all that matters is my team, but I do.

We need size and rw with right hand shot in the system. Flames should be inquiring.

What are NHL rules for tampering? Not suggesting it happened here, but with ex-teammates going to Calgary and Flames mgmt spending time at the Frozen Four it's a plausible scenario
Edit: hypothetical would be a better word

its not a college rule. its a CBA rule. if a team fails to sign a former 1st round pick they get a 2nd round pick in compensation in the next draft
in this case Hayes was #24th overall so the Hawks would get #54 overall in the 2015 draft and everyone would move one spot down

I'm not sure how good Hayes is, looks like he broke out production wise playing with Johnny and Billy, but you need to sign him if he's interested.
What is his NHLE?

I would think Florida has the inside track on this one.

I don't think it would be a bad idea to reunite the line and start them together in the AHL (unless Gaudreau forces his way onto the Flames roster). Obviously, if Hayes was never drafted and had simply emerged after being carried with Gaudreau then it would be more foolish to take a long look at him, but he is a legitimate prospect on his own who has established chemistry with two guys in the system.
If the line doesn't work in the pros, then that is too bad, but each guy has a shot to be a player as an individual so why not give it a chance?

If we end up with Hayes and Knight via this route then I will forgive Tom

The desire to play with his brother would be huge, no doubt. But the lure of playing in a huge hockey market with two of your best friends and former line mates would also be attractive.
The Carey brothers could have gone together but opted to join different teams for a greater opportunity.

If they're set to get #54 for him, is it worth trading the Colorado 2nd rounder for him? Assuming of course Colorado is booted early enough to improve upon #54.
Hmm, it looks like if Colorado loses in the first round, the first wave of eliminated teams are then sorted by points, so I don't think its possible for their 2nd rounder to be lower than #54. Can anyone confirm?

Florida, Calgary and Boston would be the obvious 3 that you think he would be leaning towards.
I am sure he will get virtually the same, or a similar ELC offer from 30 teams. He's a former 1st rounder that looks to be on the right path for an NHL career. Who wouldn't be interested in a free asset?
Hayes will have his pick of the litter.

Nah, I would rather gamble on a free agent offer than give up a pick. He would be nice to have, but isn't a must have.

well they will be getting it in 2015 because they hold his rights until after the 2014 draft
doubt they would be interested in a 2014 2nd rounder as the 2015 draft is supposedly deeper

He plays RW on the line but he's actually a left handed shot.

Seeing Calgary sending out Craig Conroy just to sign Gaudreau and Arnold and fly them back to Calgary in a private charter had to make some kind of impression on Hayes. One would think that would work in our favour somewhat.
