If the Flames are paying for it then it would violate the NCAA rule of college athletes taking gifts from a pro team.

[QUOTE=Wolfman;4713886]Who cares about burning a year on a contract. Seriously?[/QUOTEIts pretty simple. It means you get to sign your second contract, which doesn't have the monetary constraints of an ELC, a year earlier than you would have otherwise. In the case of a superstar player, that can mean millions of dollars coming to you at age 22 rather than at age 23. If I was a potential superstar, I would care. Also, would anyone here know if burning that first year makes you waiver eligible earlier?

is there some sort out special clause for it being to watch a family and not specific to your own future?

I think he meant "Who cares" from a fan perspective. Everyone knows that for the player it works out better, but some fans would rather him play an actual full (or most of a full) year on the first year of their deal because that means they'll likely get to see more of that particular player.

If not, he's joining the pro tour and Chubbs Peterson will coach him so he can win enough money to get the house back.

I was saying that the player would want to burn a year, but I wanted to know why the posters on CP are worried about burning a year. That is all I was saying. I knew the players would care.

Being from NCAA, would that make him a UFA or RFA at the end of his ELC. I wouldn't think it would matter but does anyone have the specifics on that?

I think he'd still be a RFA at the end of his entry level deal.

Al h*ll, they would just deduct the cost of his brother's airfare from Johnny's signing bonus if the NCAA was that worried about it. Think that this being a family affair and not in any way associated with the Flames trying to pay off Matthew the NCAA may not have a problem with it. I am sure it would all be ironed out with the NCAA officials before Matthew boarded the plane. Can't see him not being there for his brothers NHL debut.
That being said the NCAA can be sticklers at (most)times and this could mean Johnny has to pay for his airfare. Shucks $2500 out of his $100k signing bonus!
Or he flies commercial and still will be there for his brother.

Players rarely leave the flames during free agency. Not many come to mind anyway, brad Stuart is the one I can recall. I think sign him now. Who cares if we lose him in free agency at least we had him

Got it. The only reason I would care is because its an attractive carrot to dangle in front of a prospect who is sitting on the fence. It was an especially useful tool in snagging a much sought after free agent, like BVB

Nope the NCAA clearinghouse ( or whatever it's called) is hardcore too. I played Div 2 baseball and I had to deal with them. I wasn't anything special but I had to do all the paper work and all the players had long meetings about what you could and couldn't do. IIRC I even got a call about one of my recruitment visits.

The Flames will draft Matt Gaudreau in the 7th round this year to sweeten the pot. Johnny will make the announcement himself.
