He was drafted 4th overall just two years ago and has been impressive since that draft.
He fits the need that the Oilers have to a tee and the guys available at 2, if Ekblad is gone, might not be nearly as good a fit.
As mentioned above the Isles maybe add something to it but it would be far from a stupid move by the Oilers and could easily turn out in their favor.

I can see that from the Oilers' perspective. They get a prospective that's two years up on the development curve than what they would draft this year. They need to show signs of life sooner than later.

Makes sense for the Oilers in terms of getting a prospect that is closer to being ready.
They need to win sooner rather then later and getting a prospect two years farther along in his development curve would be good for them.
Also good for the Islanders, gets them two top tier players in this draft class and eases the pain of giving away next years pick or lets them give away the 4th overall to Buffalo this year.

it would make sense for the oilers to do that.....that being said, I can see them taking the smallest "most skilled" forward available.

Personally, I thought taking him at 4 was an over-draft and while his development looks to be on track he doesn't bring a "wow" factor that I would generally associate with a pick of that calibre.

I still think they'd give up next years... I mean think of how bad the message is to your fans and the team. It's an absolute expression of a lack of faith in the team.

I think being an islander fan makes you a little used to this kind of crap.

What is a "wow" factor from defenceman? For me a wow factor is a guy who is tough as nails that is extremely tough to play against. For defencemen the "wow" factor should be in the defensive zone. Thibk of guys like chara, Suter, and regehr. Those guys all have wow factors without even considering their offensive potential. Reinhart was easily the best defencemen at the world juniors when he played. He was picked 4th overall and has seen steady progression. He is definitely more nhl ready than ekblad based on the world juniors (he is two years older it makes sense). I think an easy argument could be made that griffin is the best young drafted dman not playing in the nhl. He will be a top four. While I see lots of potential available at the top of the draft up front, the oilers need 3 more top 4 d..

Trade makes sense for the Oil in my mind, though the Isles may need to kick in a 2nd or 3rd. Maybe not.

The Isles would be absolute morons to give up the pick this year, which knowing their management is certainly possible.
They lost Tavares for half a season, lost Okposo for part of the season, had goaltending about as bad as you could get, dealt away guys like Vanek, MacDonald and Moulson.
If they trade a top 4 pick this year they better get a top 5 pick next, which means no adding FA's, rolling with the same defense and trying their best to keep Tavares out of the line-up.
Telling fans that you are doing everything in your power to suck next year because the idiot GM made a stupid trade is no way to run a franchise even if Islanders fans are use to this crap from Snow/Wang.

I think they should trade G. Reinhart for the Oilers #1 pick and keep their pick for this years too. Having 2 top 5 2014 picks, They can try and use one of them win back some 2015 picks for next year, and they can let Buffalo keep their 2015 first.

The G. Reinhart move is certainly interesting (would they pick Sam?), but I would think if the Isles are smart (big if), they keep the more NHL-ready prospect in Griffen, keep the top 5 pick this year and do everything they can to compete next year. If the 2015 pick turn into 12th overall or something, it isn't the end of the world for them.

I still stand on the fact that the Isles can trade G. Reinhart to Edmonton for their 3rd pick, having two top 5 picks and willing to either give Buffalo one of them to keep their 2015 pick, or to keep both and trade another team that could use a first this year, such as Ottawa or a team that needs an additional pick. They can also consider trading on of them for additonal 2015 picks. But the best thing to do would be giving Buffalo the lowest one. If Buffalo has 2 top 5 picks after the trade (Most likely the #1 and #4), I wouldn't be surprised if Burke went after the 1st pick.
If Edmonton ends the season with the #2 pick, they are definitely going for Ekblad.

Then again do the islanders even take that trade? It's not like they are overflowing with defensive talent either.

Do you think/like the idea of a Poirier or klimchuk, #5 and #35 would/should happen. In exchange for first overall (ekblad)?
