Default New video card price/performance king?

http://www.anandtech.com/show/7457/t...r9-290x-review

Quote:
Getting down to business then, AMD has clearly positioned the 290X as a price/performance monster, and while that’s not the be all and end all of evaluating video cards it’s certainly going to be the biggest factor to most buyers. To that end at 2560x1440 – what I expect will be the most common resolution used with such a card for the time being – AMD is essentially tied with GTX Titan, delivering an average of 99% of the performance of NVIDIA’s prosumer-level flagship. Against NVIDIA’s cheaper and more gaming oriented GTX 780 that becomes an outright lead, with the 290X leading by an average of 9% and never falling behind the GTX 780.

Consequently against NVIDIA’s pricing structure the 290X is by every definition a steal at $549. Even if it were merely equal to the GTX 780 it would still be $100 cheaper, but instead it’s both faster and cheaper, something that has proven time and again to be a winning combination in this industry.
Pretty impressive for AMD, power usage is about the only downside.

Yeah I'm loving the reviews for the 290X, really gives you something to think about.

Be neat to see how the 780Ti stacks up in price/performance next month.

Another direct review:

Bumpity Bump:

It looks like the display port on my HD 6970 went last night, which might be a blessing in disguise. This thing is LOUD. Too loud.

I run a 3 monitor setup on this PC, what are my best options for video processors with price being a more determinate factor than power?

I'm running a 280X, and am more than pleased with the $/value it brings.

Not sure what price range you're looking at though.

Most cards are priced correctly based on their performance nowadays since we're on the cusp of the next gen.

Buy whatever is in your range and you will be getting a good deal. I hear the 750 Ti's are a great card if you want one ~200$, but you didn't post a price range.

Your CPU won't bottleneck any single-GPU setup on the market right now.

I looked up the 280x and it listed max resolutions lower than 5760x1080.

Is that a specific requirement that is still relatively uncommon in single cards?

It just means it can handle 3 displays at 1080p, which is pretty common for all $100+ single card setups, due to AMD's EyeFinity tech and Nvidia's Surround tech.

what was the website where you enter your current vid card and the one you're thinking of getting and it shows you the % in FPS increase you'll see?

Price point...

Ideally I'd like to spend less than $300 on a card, but, if I'm going to be frustrated with it at any point I'd rather spend the extra hundred and get something that I won't have to 'deal with' for a couple of years outside of cleaning, which I do. I don't know if that's a valid concern though.

I'm looking at the GTX 760 Vs. 770 right now.

Maybe get one 760 right now and another in SLI in the future if I feel the need for speed?

Not a bad call, the 760s scale really well in SLI.

EDIT: That motherboard doesn't support SLI, only Crossfire :<

Both are good cards, was looking into a 760 myself a while ago but snagged a 770 for $299 back in Oct with Nvidia's price drop and an in store sale. Now they are back up at $380-400 with the US dollar and Alt Mining I guess.

I got this Gigabyte GeForce GTX 760 OC back when it was about $235. It runs cool and quiet but it's long so check your case before buying.

http://www.ncix.com/detail/gigabyte-...85587-1396.htm

Check out the sales page at NCIX and Memory Express and price match with Shopbot.

This looks like a deal but I've never heard of the manufacturer.

Blu-Ray Drives LG CH12LS28 12X Blu-Ray Reader & Lightscribe DVD Writer Combo Drive
I am bumping this #### again because tis the season to consider upgrading my card.

I was stalling between next gen console and PC upgrade and I've decided I'm going to go with a PC upgrade.

Thinking I should double my ram, but mainly looking at upgrading my video card.

I run 3 monitors and want to be able to game on them instead of using the single window which is how I do my thang now.

For the sake of this discussion, let's pretend like there is no budget, as it is flexible depending on the product features. Most important to me is to be able to run tri-monitor gaming with good graphics at a decent temperature. How loud the card will be is a huge factor for me, maybe even the biggest.

Ok, GO!

Edit: Just to start things off, I noticed this was on sale for 90 dollars off on NCIX: http://www.ncix.com/detail/asus-gefo...85679-1081.htm

I am kind of like you in that I was holding out to see what kind of splash these new consoles would make. A year in and I find myself totally happy with skipping a generation of consoles. Consequently, I find myself checking MemEx way more often than I should be haha. If I were to buy a new vid card today I'd probably get one of those new GTX 980s. Currently I have a 670 and I find it's able to run a lot of games at max settings. I doubt it would be successful on it's own for gaming on a triple monitor setup. Maybe that 760 card would work though. What games are you playing?

I'm still selling a GTX 680 4 GB DirectCUII (in box) which is better than a 760. :wiggles eyebrows: Oh yeah. Posting a price drop. http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?p=4884286

I play a lot of Civ 5, Payday, Total War: Rome, but i don't game on 3 monitors for any of them, too intensive for my little gfx card. I don't like seeing my card temp hover over 90, so I've got some settings turned way down. I don't want that anymore.

Yeah the 760 is about equal with the 670.

Have you heard of any cheap 900 series cards coming out? The 900s have HDMI 2 which works natively at 60hz with 4K TVs.

I'm still waffling between a 970 and a 980 while I wait for the good ASUS 980 to come out. Some reviews of OCed 970s have it on par with a 980, but of course the 980s seem to overclock well too.

If I was sticking with 1920x1200 I guess a 970 would probably be fine, but eventually good high res PC monitors will come out and I'll get one, though even a single 980 probably can't drive 4K.

And rumour is that 8GB cards are going to be coming out in a few months, I wonder how much more $$ an 8GB 980 GTX would be.
