Very over-rated as GM. Unfortunately this is bad news as a flames fan

This is terrible news. Now the Canucks can start digging themselves out of mediocrity and hilarity, instead of spiraling down on their face.

My question is, will he get another shot with another team? He is a really polarising guy who never seemed very good at "playing nice" with other GM's when he made the transition from his days as a player agent.

I wonder if Bob Nicholson is going to go for a job there, since he just stepped down from Hockey Canada?

Well, it is the Aquilinis. The same owners who hired Gillis in the first place, and who thought it was a good idea to bring Tortorella in. There is still hope. I'm still betting on some more of that so effective "out-of-the-box" thinking that they like to promote.

Looks like he overplayed his hand with his my way or the highway press conference.

I think he knew this was coming and used that radio interview as a soap box to distance himself from the teams playing style, and state what he was all about and his vision.
Will see, I bet he lands another job.

This is an interesting time for the Canucks. They never should have fired AV and hired Torts but I think that wasn't Gillis' decision. Sounds like the owners like to meddle a little bit too much and things probably won't be different with anyone else steps in.

He deserves it. We only have to go back to his introductory press conference when he did the unthinkable and took a shot at the guy he replaced. He then again did the unthinkable in throwing his head coach under the bus in pleading for his job to the media. Never had any class and was always in over his head as GM. Most of the guys that get the axe in the NHL are really good guys like Feaster for instance. Gillis wasn't one of those guys.

the fact that he would cut down the guy before him who stocked the team with talent is ridiculous. right now if I am Nonis, I am laughing hard at this one, although Nonis has his own train wreck in Toronto I guess

Jay Feaster is a front runner to take control of Torts, and trade and draft the Canucks all the way to the top.

Yep. Lets not forget that Gillis was an out of the box hire in the first place. The fact that he crashed and burned after being handed one of the best rosters in the NHL kind of shows why he was out of the box in the first place.
If I'm a Canucks fan I don't feel a lot better knowing the organization may go the Oilers route of reaching back to past glory to manage the team. However as much as we hate to see it probably a positive day for the organization going forward.

I believe in the Jays.
|
I'm surprised. I thought it would be Tortorella that would bite the bullet. New GM's usually like to hire their own coach so if whoever replaced Gillis asks for and get's his own coach that's a hefty chunk of $$ going down the drain on management golden parachutes.

What "glory" are the Canucks reaching back to? I can't think of any past glory.

Looks like he has finally maxed out his return on the core that Burke put in place for him (Sedins, Kesler, Bieksa, etc.).
