Still need your phone near by. I'd love something that would let me leave my phone at home, especially doing active things like running, swimming etc. I see no value in adding to the things I need to bring with me.

I would like more information on this. Anybody else hear about this? I haven't been able to google up anything.

That is so cool. Compared to the size of the person's hand, that is one tiny piece of watchmaking.

EDIT - watchmaking is probably the wrong word as it doesn't tell time.

This is the A158W which is exactly the same watch I wore from Grade 2 to Grade 12 (strap changes of course) until the glass was smashed. It's sleek. It's feather light. It fits perfectly. I grew up wearing it. It feels like an extension of my body. I have tried expensive watches, replica watches, mechanical watches, all sorts of fancy digital and LED fashion watches and I don't want to put any of them on any more. Every day I just reach for this and never get bored of looking at it because it brings back good memories.

I bought a backup as well the last time I saw it in Wal-Mart for $20 in Dec. Timex has a retro Indiglo line as well but those watches always broke on me as a kid which is why I always went back to the Casio. The only thing I would change is swapping the green LED in the corner (yes it's lit by a corner LED that doesn't even light up the whole screen like the good ol' days) with a yellow one as I seem to recall my childhood watch having a yellow light.

We're of like minds. This is my bad boy:

My wife and I just returned from а trip то Switzerland. We've seen a lot of watches, including visits to Patek Philippe store and Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva, Vacheron Constantin store (where they'd let me try a $1M watch on my wrist, which was quite an amazing and weird feeling, to be honest), numerous other fine watch stores and, of course, Baselworld-2014 exhibition. We only had one day in Basel, and that was not nearly enough to see the entire show. We only walked through Halls 1.1 and 1.2 out of three grand exhibition halls. Hall 3 is primarily gems and jewellery. Hall 1.1 is where the Global Brands are presented. Big mistake: I did not take my good camera with me. Even bigger mistake: I did not take a lens with a polarizing filter. Shooting watches displayed under glass under intense lighting is nearly impossible without a polarizer. So, fair warning, my photographs from the show are of a very poor quality, unfortunately.

I did take all of 2014 catalogues from the brands that are of interest to me. Most came with price lists, but I think this information is available elsewhere too. The overall experience was shocking and overwhelming, this was my first Baselworld show attendance. The most memorable displays/presentations to me were Patek Philippe's, Zenith's and Hublot's. New collections from GP and UN were also incredible.

Of special notes:
  • HUGE , gigantic aquarium stocked with live cyclids installed ABOVE the Breitling pavilion;
  • Hublot watch designed jointly with Ferrari engineers;
  • Patek Phillippe movements display;
  • Zenith 3D tourbillions;
  • Girrard-Perregaux new skeletons;
  • Ulysse Nardin's hour-striking warriors watch.
Anyway, if you want to see photographs from Halls 1.1 and 1.2 to have some feeling for what was there, click on my Flicker link below. I only took shots of the watches and displays that looked impressive to me. Obviously, due to the time constraints, I've missed a lot of good stuff, I am sure. Let me know if you have any questions and ENJOY!

The BIG 4-0 is just around the corner, and as a B-day present to myself, I am finally going to get my long coveted Seamaster Professional. I have never delved into this type of watch pricing territory, so I was wondering from all you big shots that are there already.

A) Where is the best place to by an Omega in town?
B) What is a reasonable discount to expect on one?

I know there's the adage, if you can't afford the sticker price on a luxury timepiece you shouldn't be buying one, but being the cheapo I am, I say blow your adage out your bumhole.

The piece I am looking at looks to be in the 7k range.

Aim for 10-15% off. I don't know how many Omega dealers are in Calgary, but you might have to shop around before finding one that will negotiate price.

Here are the 2 authorized retailers in town - http://www.omegawatches.com/stores/c...&sellwatches=1

Brinkhaus used to carry them and they did a big sell off of their Omega watches at the beginning of the year. Who knows, they may still have some stuff there.

My very first Swiss watch was Omega and I bought it at Calgary Jewelers. Having said that, if I knew what I know today about watches and watch prices, I would not have done that and bought from a reputable US online distributor. Yes, there is that official Omega warranty thing that the dealer will brag about, but it is not that significant at all. All serious online distributors honour the one-year warranty and after that, you're on your own anyway and will need to find a good watchmaster in town to service your investment.

From my own experience, I would recommend the following dealers:

Jomashop - by far one of the best online dealers by reputation. (http://www.jomashop.com/omega-seamas...ge=0&sf=1&sd=a )

300watches - good selection as well. (http://300watches.com/luxury-watch-brands.html)

Both companies do ship to Canada and you will have to incur shipping costs and import charges. However; there will be a price saving, so a trip to New York/New Jersey could be very worthwhile.

This might sound kind of stupid, but check Costco. They seem to always have one or two high-end watches (models/brands rotate constantly). Beacon Hill has had a Speedy Pro for a month or two now. They had one other Omega, don't remember which though.

Obviously grey-market, their warranty/return policy is solid. Worth a look perhaps.
