You could buy him out... you just don't save a ton of cap space by doing it. Its still 555,000 saved next year though if you do buy him out.

It was discussed last week on 960 that there was talk the Leafs may consider buying him out as an addition by subtraction thing but given they will surely have a new coach next season I feel they would be better served seeing if another coach can revive his career.

I mean maybe the Leafs are feeling generous now that Tucker and Armstrong's $2 million cap hit is coming off the books.

Yeah, definitely not worth it. This is how it would play out:

David Clarkson buyout from CapGeek.com

2014-15: $4,694,444
2015-16: $4,694,444
2016-17: $3,694,444
2017-18: $3,694,444
2018-19: $4,694,444
2019-20: $4,694,444
2020-21: $444,444
2021-22: $444,444
2022-23: $444,444
2023-24: $444,444
2024-25: $444,444
2025-26: $444,444

Might as well wait and see if he can suck a little less next year.

With the loss tonight to the Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto is officially eliminated from playoff contention.

Collapse indeed.

For once, having this game on national TV was excellent. The Leafs will not be the national game this Saturday, thank goodness. The CBC can go and cry in a dark corner.

Season on the line and they couldn't score on one of the worst goalies in the NHL.

Never mind the fans not getting it, the players don't get it either. Kadri stating the Leafs were one of the top 10 teams for 85 percent of the season completely ignores they were one of the worst when it counted.

I actually don't think it will be that hard to move Clarkson, assuming his ntc is simply 14 teams he wont go to. Choose a team from the list and retain 1-2 million of Clarkson's salary and he should be moveable. Or am I missing something?

I could see him ending up in New Jersey again at reduced salary

They are going to have huge regrets with that Phaneuf re-signing.

The $2M cap anchor for six years? Remember that to come out ahead on that they'd have to find someone else to fill Clarkson's spot better than he can for under $3M a season. This year that wouldn't have been tough but let's be realistic, he didn't sign a contract and suddenly forget how to play hockey. I have no faith that the Leafs management will figure out how to make it work, but that doesn't mean there's no solution that would make Clarkson useful (if overpaid).
